Bromley, vice-president of purchases and stores announced in Newfoundland today. Diesel propelled strengthened for work in the ice when necessary and powered by Canadian built Fair- banks Morse diesel engines the new ships will considerably ini- prove and strengthen the present coastal service. One vessel will replace the set. Glenco which is 52 years old and cannot be maintained in service economically. the other will re- place the Clarenvllle and Corny, two small motor vessels freeing them to augment coastal services to other parts of the island. Tenders for the vessels were called from all Canadian shipyards and yards in the United Kingdom. The order has been placed with Hall Russel and Co. Ltd. of Aber- deen which submitted the lowest tender. Of all welded steel con- structions the ships will have an overall length of 210 feet, a moulded breadth of 34 feet, a moulded depth to the upper deck of 19 feet six inches. Each vessel will have accommo- dation for 50 first class and 40 sec- ond class passengers and approx- imately 1,500 cubic feet for the storing of refrigerated cargo.
