HELP NOT REQUIRED. Consequently Not Many are Expected Prom the Provinces. W11~::.'1P1aG, August 18.-Mr. Hugh Mc- Kellar, Chief Clerk in the Department of Agriculture, said in regard to the de- mand for labor to harvest Manitoba’s cro _ that there were very few requests D ofor men being received from different places, but he could not say just how_ many would be required, as all the reports, have not yet being received from the de~ pa.rtment’s correspondents. Judging'f_roln the present outlook, however, there were enough men in the Province already to garner this year's crop, and he did not think that many would be required from Ontario or the other Provinces. "Con- ditions representing the labor problem are altogether different this year from. former seasons. The grain had repened earlier, and the farmers will have plenty of time to get it in before the snow flies, and as it is very light he will reap and gather the grain himself, in order to save the expense of help. Oats and barley will be ready after the wheat is harvested, and as the farmer is not rushed for. time he will in all probability, be able to _attend this year’s harvest with the assislzance of what men are :already in the Province. Many of the farmers discharged their men during the June drouth from motives of economy, and it is from these that most of the requests are being received now for help. The requests \being received do not specify the figure of the wage which it is proposed _to pay this year. It is pointed out that with good crops in On- tario this year men are receiving $1 to $1.50 a day, and with this rate obtaining it is hardly likely they will leave home un- less big pay is promised here. PROGRESS OETHE HARVEST. - Reports _received at the Provincial De- partment of Agriculture and from travell- ers returning from the country indicate that the harvest in southern Manitoba is now well advanced and is progressing favorably.Iu other parts the harvest a is a little later, but the grain is all in excellen condition for cutting, and the harvest is general all over th'e Province. The barley and oat crops will be later than wheat by ful‘y a fortnight, :ind thus the farmers will be given plenty of time to stock in their wheat before the coarse grains are ready. The demand for laborers this year has been small in comparison with last year, when over 8,000 men were asked for. Many sections have reported no men want- ed, while others, principallynear Hartney, report a few.»=»{l1he»-northern part of the Province will come in alittle later, but no demands formen have asyet been received The largefinflux from the east is not expected this year. Ali THE SUPPLIES OF WAR. Enormous Quantities of Goods Seat to South Africrby Great Britain. Some idea of the cost of South African war may be derived from the amount of war materials sent out. It appears from an article in the Edinburgh Review`_that 170 millions of small-arm ammunition have been forwarded. The following figures give the corresponding provision ofartillcry ammunitionz- Over 105,000 rounds for the 12-pounder H. A. gun.
