;?3 s ’Morru'ng Stock Letter ( r l l y i I (Beoelved over Pitlleld and Co's Private Wire) NEW YORK, April il—News over the bands, was decidedly mixed. The Labor Relations Board ordered Jines and Laughlin to retire 10 Union Labor men. The company expects to appeal tho case to the Circuit Appeals Court. Weather conditions have not been favorable, at least to Easter business, on the other hand car loadings for week end- ing April 4 showed 613,867 cars an increase of 13,380 over the pre- ceding week and 684,411 over the corresponding week 1035. Foreign exchanges continue under pr°..*x.ure. Stering is 4.94 1-18, French francs 6.580 virtually back to the gold shipping point. It will be recalled that Thursday's market was irregular but with sev- eral stoclu standing out promin- ently such as J. 1. Case, Colum- bian Carbon, New York Central. Atchison, Reynolds Bprings. Action of the rails was good. We would expect another irregularly firm market today. Continuation of strength in the rails would be most encouraging. MORNING STOITI LETTER NEW YORK. April 11—'I‘here was no great interest in the stock market on Thursday and trading was without significance. The only excitement was rather heavy buying on some of the rails, par- ticularly New York Central. U. 8. Steel Common with no earning power in the last few years has recovered to above 70. New Central would seem to have almost as much leverage if continuation of businus is good as steal and buy- ing seems likely to increase in New York Central. In general the spec- ulative ,' ‘ remains about the Hill. Business continues to show gain in department store sales. The decrease in broken loans an- nounced after the close 'I‘hur'sday calls attention to the fact that debits are not increasing. On the other hand it is possible that high margins are greatly restrain- ing buying powr in the stock market. In fact the one dis- appointment in the market recent- ly is the slight progress made on the up-side by most issues. A, few of the leaders such as General Motors have shown good galrlg in the past month but the rank and file of stocks remain about un- changed. Ordinarily such a move- ment ia a sign or the market‘top- ping off. On the other hand the market may be simply a reflection of the new conditions imposed by higher margin requirements, how- ever, if in the next week or pos- sibly within the next few days, if there is no more tendency for general strength to develop, profit taking and reducing of lines of stocks are likely to be encouraged. CHICAGO, April 12—Aroused by a government forecast that United states winter wheat production would be 27,000,000 to 52,000,000 bushels below private estimates, wheat soared yesterday. Bullish enthusiasm, though, was checked by asertions from Chic- ago unofficial experts that the gov ent’s production estimate took into consideration weather and growing conditions the re- mainder of the season, rather than conditions as they existed on April 1. such an offl:iai forecast, it was urged, was an attempt at pre- dicting weather for the next four months, and thus amounted pure- ly to gumswork.
