AMPUTATION OF A LIMB INJURED EIGHT YEARS aco.—The New Glasgow, N. S. ‘‘Chronicle,” of this week, reports that a young man, Freeman McKean, son of Samuel McKean, Esq., of Melrose, St. Mary’s, recent- ly had his leg amputated above the knee. The amputation was rendered necessary from in- juries received on the knee eight years ago, which had become diseased, causing great suffering. The young man had previously submitted to a very trying operation in the Hospital at Halifax, but obtatned no relief. He is considered out of danger now, and ex- pects to be able to move about ere long. On the 3!st ult., a man named Theophilus N->Mullin was killed by the falling of a tree, at Georgetown Road, Lot 50. It appears that he deeeased, in company with Mr. Patrick Cairns were cutting a tree each which lodged them, avd when in the act of doiag so the tree fell suddenly, a large branch of one of them struck the deceased on the head and mashed it in, causing instantaneous death. Mr. Cairns being a short distance from the deceased, and there being some bushes between them, could not see what occurred, and was very near being struck himself with another branch. He called out to the deceased, and not receiving a reply went to where he was lying, and, to his horror, found that life had departed. He turned the head of the deceased to see if any life remained, but he was still in death. Correspondence. 8 We do not hold ourselves responsible for the statements or opinions of our correspondents Sin,—In the issue of the Darty Examiner, of the 30th ult., there appeared a communica- tion over the signature of ‘John Doyle,” which is erronous in every particular. The article dares contradic- tion. Now, the first part of his letter, wherein he states that [asked him why he called me a thief in court; this statement is entirely un- truthful, and I ean produce the evidence of the other ‘‘three young men” to substantiate what I say. Also, about his stating I had'an ‘‘old score” to settle with him, is equally un- true. te (Mr. Doyle) has a very nice way of sliding over things, and introduces the “Frenchman's rag,” etc., as my reason for quarrelling with him. But the real unvar- ished truth of the matter is this: that he several times previously came into my hotel, Wales Hotel,” and not ‘Prince of Wales Boarding House, as stated in Doyle’s epistle— and ordered supper, and itis not here neces- sary for me to state that he did not pay for it. So that when he came Christmas evening I, in a friendly way, requested him to pay me his bill. But the impertinent fellow only laughed | me to scorn. This incensed me considerably, and a few warm words ensued, when he (Doyle) strack me a violent blow on the head, Mrs. b. then interfered in my behalf. I then seized a chair to defend myself; but before [ was 2vare of it, Doyle struck the chair, sending it up clear of my hands, breaking the lamp which was suspended from the ceiling, and scattering the oil over one of my children, nearly suffocating it. He then struck me several more blows in the dark (as the lamp was then out) which rendered me insensible to everything passing about me, He appears to expose himself to the public gaze as a pugilist; or. in his words, a ‘‘tartar.” Now, if going about the town imposing upon innocent people, and running bills in every tavern and place folks are foolish enough to accommodate him, constitutes a tartar, [ don’t in anyway envy him his coguomen of of ‘‘tartar.” Now, Mr. Editor, I must apologize for occupying so much of your valuable space with a subject so unworthy, And remain, yours, etc., EDWARD BLACKBURN. This place has improved its complexion since New Year’s Day, as the bare groun] is nicely covered with snow to make the best of travelling. Mr. J. W. An addition will shortly be made te the Station House, which will greatly add to the importance of this place. The new “vessels registered at Halifax, the past year, numbered 24, of which three were barques, one brigantine, and twenty schooners, making a total tonnage of 3,654. The ships transferred from other ports, and those registered de novo are 29, of which 8 were steamers (chiefly tugs), 1 barquentine, 4 brigantines and 16 schooners, making a quence of the refusal of the Home Secretary to grant the application of the wife of | O'Donovan Rossa for permission for her! husband to return home to die. It is said, that Rossa’s health is completely -under- mined; that his recovery is out of the ques-) tion, and that the few months of life stili, remaining tohim could only be prolonged | for a little while by his return to his native’ land. Mrs. Rossa, in making her applica- tion to the Home Secretary, said that she would undertake on the part of her hus- band’s friends to warrant that no political demoustration should attend his arrival in ireland, and that he merely desired to come home to die.
