At the coming coronatlon of King

treasures such as the modern world has 
seldom seen. It has been so long since the 1
last British coronation that few persons _
now living can remember the display oi
gold and gems of historic interest and
pricelessvalue which was then in evi-
fierce. The `reviures of the Tower will
b-:again brought forth forth on the
occasion of the Klng's coronation.
There is ii vast difference between the
value of the crowns of the earlier and
later English monarchs. King Alfred's
crown of a thousand years ago has l 'vc
been lost, but the chronicles of hi~ I .ine
set downitu value at 248 pounds 10 shill-
ings. Contracted with this is the imperial
crown of the late Queen Victoria which
was the most costly that was ever made
on earth. There are by actual count
2,783 diamonds in this crown, many of
them large, handsome stones, besides 277
pearls, 16 sapphires, 11 emeralds and 5
rubies. One ruby is said to be worth
£100,000 and the big sapphire is also a
historic gem of almost priceless value. It
was the one worn in a ring by Edward
the Confessor, and was buried with him
at Westminster.
It is told that most of the royal trea-
sures used at coronations were made in
1662. At the time of Commonwealth all
the crowns and royaI` regalia were des-_
troyed except the golden pitcher used for
holding the anointing oil,the golden spoon
and the coronation stone. These will be
used at King’s Edwards coronation.
After the Restoration all the ancient
articles signiiicant of royalty were remade
by Sir Robert Vyner. the royal gold-
smith. St. Edwa.rd’s crown is the omcial
crown of England, used at coronations.
It is of great size, and is described as
almost clumsy when compared with the
gorgeous and splendid crown afterwards
made for the late Queen.
The orbs and sceptres of the royal
regalia, which are deposited in the Tower S
are onlybrought forth on the occasion of
a coronatlon. Theyare as interesting as
thecrowns. The first and larger of the
two orbs in the Tower collection was that
made for King Charles II. This has been
used by every Sovereign since his day.
The orb is held in the hand at coronatlon.
It is six- inches in diameter and ie adorned I
with clusters of colored jewels and
diamonds. There are two soeptres in the

King James II. _
Still more ancient and historic are the
famous Coronation Stone, the golden
ampulla or eagle and the Coronation
Spoon. The two latter are 500 to 600
years old. The golden eagle measures-r
nine inches in height and is ofsoiid gold .

have in their possession. The accused
are entitled to a fair trial and this no
doubt they will receive. The punish-
