Lllllll FHIIM ill ` ~ A lSll|l|] Sllllllill The following is a. letter received by Mrs. _Robert McNaught. Coleman from her sou, Sgt. Claude McNuught. formerly of the 55th Battalion; _ Somewhere in France, July 23, 1 16. Dearest Moiherz- < .- \ \ ,.- ~-`|~`;,7?`>"2i‘-"I’£'l"-i»"`»‘..l.` I suppose by now you are getting anxious as to my whereabouts and my health. Well i_must say I am feeling fine and I am never sick u. day. Well ‘since I last wrote, I had a four weeks course in Shorncliffe and I passed It fine. then the remains of our Battalion had hard luck, we were put in with the 40th and we sure had it hard foi a time. but finally I got a draft. going to France and I am now proud to say I am in the oldest. first and best Bat- talion that ever left Canada, I am in the “Princess Patricia" Light Infantry There was only a few of us picked for ir. Joe is sim in England. I was tht only one from the Island in the draft so I feel pretty proud. We have been in France for about a week and it sure is some ilne country. lt is very warm all the time and we drill hard here, we have to do every parade _ip heavy marching order, that is with ali you own on your back. We were put through the gas the other day ann It was some experience, they had a long room about thirty feet long and they filled this with deadly gas, ten times as strong as what the Germans use and we had to walk through it but of course we had our masks on and we ilidn't mind it hut I tell you lf our masks hadn’t been just perfect we 'certainly would have been killed. Well Mother, doi\'t worry about me as I am always able to look after my- self. I have had lots of experience and know what I am going into so dcn’t worry nt all, I will he back on old “Spud'Island" when the war is over and will keep you all interested in telling you stories of my experienc- es, Well we are getting fed well here and everybody seems happy. Well Mother I must bring this letter to a close, remember me to all my friends. Tell them I will not have any time to write and not to expect any letters from me but of course I will write iuwm. _ - --`»--Q, home and that is ali. Good bye. From. your loving son.
