CARD OF THANKS The family of the late David Osborne w' h to thank those who sent Mass Cards and Messages of sympathy ill their recent sad ber- eavement. the Seals brought in 32130.00 in 1936-37. last year this total reached the ten thousand dollar mark. it is appropriate on this twentieth anniversary to reflect for a mo- meat on the changed TB picture during the past two decades. in 1937. the first complete year of the -Lcagucis operations. there were 87 new active cases of TB reported. 63 deaths were attributable to the disease and the capacity of the sanatoriuni was 80. in 1954. 98 ncw cases were found. only 11 deaths were due to TB and the avcrailc capaci ' of the san was 154. Up to Nov. 1st. of this year 4ft new cases have been found with only 4 deaths reported. STRIKING FACT Though it is d izerous to draw conclusions from figures based on only one year in a small populat- ion. a sirikint! lat-t is that the number of new ca. . - covered has not declined to any- thing like extent of the de- crease in the mortality rate. The latter is title mainly to improved surgical techniques. new drugs and increased sanatorliim accomodat- ion- The drastic reduction in the death rates may be considered as one successful battle in the overall campaign against TB. hut when we consider that til new cases have been detected so far this year we are a long way from final victory. This also to be remembered that any of the 43 cases found pendent on the Christmas Seal campaign Past experience has shown that from 41 to 43 percent of recipients of Seals respond with a contribution. Tubcrculniils la everybodyls worry. This percent-, age should therefore be much clos- er to 100. The average individual contribution has been between 31.54! and 31.60. varying with the general economic picture in the province. but our figures have borne a close relationship with those of the other two older Maritime Provinces. To ensure that the Leanne goes ahead again in it's campaign results let us try to.make the first figure quoted above. 45 percent this year- The twin Seal this year is do- corative but it also can and must be effective.
