NOV. 18,1898# CANADIAN CRIMINAL STATISTICS The annual report on the criminal statistics of Canada. is of interest chiedv because it enables the reader to ascertain whether t-he country is progressing or retiograding in the amount of its vice and crime. The report also enables us to learn how one province compares with another in criminal matters, with other par- ticulars' that may strike the minds of those interested in the prev ention of crime and the reform of the criminal classes. The report for 1897, like the pre- ceding reports, treats of offences against the laws under two main divi- sions-indictable oHences` and sum- mary convictions. The first of these includes the graver crimes and the latter the more numerous minor of- ifences. For indictable offences the number of convictions in the entire Dominion was 5,721 as against 5,204 in 1596. In comparison with the other prov- 1 inces P. E. Island holds a very favor- able position in regard to these graver offences. In the Dominion at large there were 11.06 indictable offences British Columbia the rate was 21.73 ; tin the legislature agitated as it never was before F _ i-mth lil'-‘U>¢D vt-C:iiF~>-i #- We | Methodists . 17.5 EATING APPLES AT NIGIIT- Presbyterians '-*- ‘ 1 Roman Catholics Oi her Creeds _ _ Not given 11 3 1.8 .
