The department, faced with a cutback in funding for part-time teachers, has but ‘ ations by his students. \ The professor was' the first in Canada to lose his job as a result of student evaluations. The decision to fire the professor came in a majority its creative writing courses, ' ‘ and will channel the money into an additional section of “effective writing” next semester. One English professor, angered at the departmental decision, said the emphasis of Bishop’s English depart- ment has traditionally been academic rather than pro- fessional. “We think of ourselves as an English literature ‘de’part-‘ ‘ ment,” the professor, who wished to remain unidenti- fied, said. “(But) there are a limited number of things we can do.” The department’s division- al ‘chair said there was a greater need for effective writing and with the recent cutbacks “the highest prior- ity must go to the great- est need.” [74!“ . . 67 (J a vote from the departmental assembly, comprised of tea- chers, students and adminis- traters. The decision came after an evaluation showed five out of every six stud- ents saw him as a “bad pro- fessor”. UQAM is the only univer- sity in Montreal which auto- matically includes student evaluation in the files of professors. This evaluation is taken into account during \ nominations and promotions ‘ of professors. The evaluations can also have positive results.
