In the Senate Railway Committee yes- terday it was proved that Mercier, before leaving for Europe, had borrowed five thousand dollars from the bank, which was afterwards paid out ef the hundred thousand | duliars steal, and that another five thousand was remitted to him to Paris. Evidence traced directly through the bank books the application of the whole hundred thousand dollars showed to have been paid in first to Pacaud’s credit and then checked out by bim to retire pro- missory notes on which Mercier, Tarte, Senator Pelletier and Charles Langelier, invariably appeared as endorsers. A pro- misory note of Tarte’s was also taken up. Mr. Webb, local agent of the Union Bank, tesfied that Pacaud had proposed to him to make a certain set of entries regarding the steal which would not have truly represented the transactions.
