Alberta crude oil exports lrom this port have dwindled to a trickle since the end of the Suez Canal crisis. The oil movement reached a peak during the crisis. but in the last couple of months only five tankers have loaded here. The slump is expected to continue to September with only one tanker scheduled to load for Japan mean- while. United States Pacific ports be- gun to stockpile Alberta crude during the canal closure and now they have enough on hand for neveral Inonths' requiremetfts. Furthermore. shipments of crude from Kuwait in the Persian Gulf are arriving in large volume at California refineries. Reopening of the canal caused an immediate slump in tanker charter rates. so it is once again profitable to ship oil all the way from the Persian Gulf to U.S. ports in super-tankers on long- term charter.
