He lives in the notorious Ballinag- leragh distnict of County Leitrim, where a pitched battle took place a few weeks ago between tivo armies on police and peasants, and for years had been courting the local beauty. A little while ago he transferred his affections to her rival, also of Bal- linagleragh. The jilted girl's relatives did their utmost ,to prevent 'the wedding tak- ing p1ace.They-were supported hy the parish priest, who is a power in Ire- land in these matters. He refused the necessary certificate. The young man thereupon went to the bishop of the diocese, but the bishop upheld the priest. The young mon, however, is a per- son of resource, and told the clergy that he would go and get muffled ln a registry office in the distant town of Enniskillen. Nobody in Ballina!- leragh believed that he would ily in the Jace of the parish priest but he did., The night he brought his bridel home an extraordinary scene occur-l red. A large crowd collecqzd outside; the house where the dancing and feasting were in progress, and groan- cd and hooted. The groaning ceased uncut midnight, and the festivities continued. An hour later about thirty men, wearing crepe masks, burst in the door of the cottage and called on the father of the bride to take his daughter home, with the al- ternative of being seriously dealt with. l The old nlan thereupon took his daughter away. The valiant bride groom declared he would accompany them. The trio marched in the small hours of the morning towards the home of the hride's parents to the accompaniment of groaning and hoot- ing. When about a mile of the jour-‘ ney had been traversed, the bride- groom was seized by another disguisv ed band and compelled to go back to his own home. ' This occurred sevefal days ago, and the bridegroom has not seen his bride since. He has not been allowed to lenve his house, and the bride has not been allowed to leave her fi|'iher's Both houses are watched night and day. _ The police are powerless to restore order in the district or to prevent this very original form of boycot- ting.
