ed for the loss of this sum when we
get prohibition and busy themselves
_._ in figuring up ways in which the loss

ladvanced way of thinking conclude
that it is not a good thing but a. bad
thing for the country that so much
money is derived from such a source.
And when the public conscience is
once awakened the people of Canada
'will refuse thus to share in the profits
of a business which distributes wide-
spread ruin and desolation in the
homes of the land.
Let us take a well lrnown example
' for comparison. The little principal-
ity of Monaco on the‘Medilerranean_,
with an area __of eight square miles
and n. population just about equal to
_ that of Charlottetown, enjoys a very
, large revenue _in proportion to the
v numbers of its people. _That revenue
[is mainly made up from the proceeds
haf the great gambling establishment
a€Monta Carlo and the attendant
sale of liquors. And Monaco is
notoriously the one spot on' the face
of the earth where there are most
men in a brief space of time ruined in

In Canada we have a law against
flgambling, but the vice is not wholly
eradicated. Secretly it is practised
to a considerable extent we. may fear,
and sometimes it obtrudes itself upon
the public notice. If it were recog-
nized by law and licensed by the
government there would be doubtless
a. very large development .of gambl-
ing in this country, and the govern-
ment might derive hundreds of
thousands if not millions from .that
source. And why not ?‘.l`here is the
familiar argument:--The people will

l which forbids. Any government
that would propose to make Canada

every evil, is less harmful and less to
be dreaded than the rampant evil of
