THE DAIL Y EXAMINER, Bromoform in Whooping Cough. Dr. Hugo Lowenthal, of Professor Senator's clinic in Berlin, has tried bromoform in the treatment of whooping cough, it having been recommended by Dr. Stepp, of Nurnberg, and he is disposed to agree with him in consider- ing it a valuable remedy, Dr. Lowenthal says that it exerts an almost specific action upon whooping cough, at all events, if it is used at the commencement, A hundred chil- dren were treated with it, varying in age from 8 weeks to 7 years. The doses given were from 2 to 5 drops three or four timesa day. The liquid was simply dropped into a table- spoonful of water, and formed a bead floating in the water. The quantity dispensed at once was abouta drachm. The parents were cau- tioned to keep the bromoform from the light, as otherwise it is liable to become decomposed. As a rule, the good effects of the medicine began to show jthemselves on the second or third day, the vomiting being arrested within a week after the commencement of the bromo- form. In cases where complications, such as pneumonia, occurred, they ran a favorable course, aud where there were relapses, a return to the bromoform soon arrested the symptoms. In a very few cases the drug appeared to pro- duce sleepiness and lassitude, and in one case, that of a weakly child a little over a year old, where a drachm had been given in the course of three days,a semi-comatosefcondition was in- duced, Subcutaneousfinjections of ether revived the child, who was found to have pneumonia. This, however, ran a rapid and favorable course, and afterward the whooping cough was successfully treated by renewed doses of bro- moform.— Lancet. Estimation of Pedigree. In listening to a breeder extolling the merits of the pedigree of an inferior ant- mal, we are always reminded of an exceed- ingly illustrative and somewhat humorous incident. A thoroughly characteristic Hiberian, and an unrepresentative Scotch- man were two of a party of tourists that were paying a visit to the island of Ilona. Before leaving the Island, the Scotchman, who was a very dwarfish personage, was harassing the rest of the party by continual- ly chattering about the fine physique of his ancestors interred on the Island, and his descent from a long line of worthies. When they came to the plot on the island m which these relatives were interred, the guide re- ferred tothemas arace of giants The Irishman being somewhat nettled, looked down on his puny manikin and said : **By the powers that be, my little man, ye may well say ye had a descent, and sure, what a terrible one it was too!" Pedigree is not to be belittled, but it is far more legible and doubly valuable if written on the backs of the animals than if only in- scribed in books.—Canadian Live Stock and Farm Journal for October.
