Saturday, September We have been requested to give some infor- mation as to the culture of the grape in open air, and in the absence of interesting i ‘- telligence, we willingly devote a few lines n) this subject. 'l‘liere may, however. be those who have doubts whether the vine will grow in the open air in the cliinato of P. E: island. to these we reply, that we have seen it growing; that there was, and we believe flip! there ig yet, one growing and bearing fruit iri Cherry V al ey. The writer has two vines, raised last season from seed furnished him by Mr. ' p son of Cavendish, which stood the winter wit - out shelter or covering of any sort. except the snow, and have grown vigorously during Vince of Nova Sootia, the white sweet-water -grape is very commonly to be met with, perfect- in its fruit in the open air, either against houses or walls, or upon trellises, forming an inclined‘ plane. 'l‘h:it with the same care, the snails resultshwilll pa pl‘(5d|l(l!’0d in this Island, we iave not t esi itest ou t. ‘ The vine is proiiagated by seed, cuttings or layers, as well as by grafting and budding or abundance of plants already grown, we shall confine ourselves to the three tirst. B seed : these must be sewn in pots, and forced in a. hot bed, then careful! planted out in the open air, it-dious method, as it will be some time before the plant comes to hearing, we tlici-cfore advise cuttings. These are from a foot to .-igliteen inches long, consistingofnew or young wood, with a joint or two of that of the preceding year. Til0_V'£l.l'0 planted so as to leave only two eyes above ground; some litter are carefully watered in dry weather ; cuttings ofthissortso treated, strik: freely. By layers : this is eifect-.:d by taking in the Spring of the year, a she it, and cutting it notch in the stem, an inch or two below the eye, and tirinly peg- ping it ‘down with a hooked twig; the layer iiinst he kept nioist in very dry wcatlicr, but not too much so, its the plant will he likely to rot. Cuttings are, upon the whole. prcli.-i'atblc, and we would advise those who have viiii-s, to pro- pagate them in this way. .- f the vine is intended for ornament chit-lly, or for sliadc,'it may be allowed to grow freely, but if fruit is l't‘llllil'Cd, it iiiiistl)e<-arefully pruned. 'l‘ho best way to do this, is to watch the cutting, letting it produce two shoots, which are to be carcfiilly trained, rubbing off all others while youn;;. Miller advi-.-cs Cutting; these two shoots down to two eyes, about Mi- chaelmas. In the next year, the shoots that are produced l'rom these eyes are, at the same period, to be cut down to three eyes, and the same process is to be repeated, leaving each alts-mate shoot to form inother. wood. Mil- ler sa s.-—‘~‘Vines rarely produce any hearing shoots from wood that is. more than it year old, tlicreforc, great care should be taken to have such wood in every part of the trees, for the fruit is alwavs produced upon shoots of the same year, w iicli come out from buds of the i0.li_yClll‘S we-id." We are thus particular, not that it is Csiillltiill, that our farmr-rs should raise grapes, but because, if it is ascertain.-d that the climate is propitiiitory to the vine undcr ju- dicious ciiltiirc, it is evidence, that Prince Edw-ird island is as favorably oll'in the respect of climate, us any other part of North America between the same parallels ofliititudc. Gardening; is the sister art of .-lgi-iculturc, but the in-art-r the latter approaches to the for- mer, the more ierfect it is. To lmro it said, "' it looks more ike a garden than a farm." is a species of praise that every a-rriciilturist. should look forward to. And this one of the reasons why, we think. that the artol'1lorticul—‘ ture should be encouraged and brought teas great. perfection as possible in this Island espccia y. ‘cllllliollelowll. -Married, t At Charlottetown, on Thursday the 20th insl., the Rev.
