' THE MORNING GUARDIAN TUESDAY, DEC. 15, 1908s I HON W- S- FIELDING- The Minister of Finance is now here on a visit to the Island and will receive a very cordial welcome. __Bor some time the date of his coming was is regrettably uncertain, but lnany case he is regarded by our people in common with those of the Maritime Provinces as one of the leading men in the Laurier Ad- ministration. Since the retirement of Sir Louis _Davies and Hon A. G. Blair, Mr. Fielding is easily the foremost man in public life in the Maritime Provinces. And te must of necessity be-a very busy man t‘irs¢ times as he is entrusted with two cf the leading departments of the public service, thoee of Finance and Rail- way s. In addition to these important trusts he has apparently undertaken a double portion of political responsibility in getting the Maritime Provinces in line f ar the forthcominft election. I The situation is altogether unpreceden- ted. Neither New Brunswick nor Prince Edward Islind has any representation in _ the federal cabinet. The three Provinces are wholly dependent upon the Nova Scotian ministers and of these two Sir Frederick Borden confines himself pretty exclusively to matters pertaining to militia and defence. He apparentiyas- sumes no political responsibility outside of his own department except within his own Province. It is therefore to Hr. Fielding that the three Provinces must lookin many matters pertaining to fed- mi hirhhs and also whim ihhi the DRU GGIST’ ip Liberal party in Eastern Canada must The Medical Hall. ,look for general guidance and direction. But it is not our fault that the repre- sentation of the Maritime Provinces in the cabinet has been so sadly depleted, or that the ministers and especially Mr. Fielding, upon whom so much depends, are too busy to come and see us. And there are several matters that require ministerial attention just now and es- pecially before the election is brought on. One of these is the hnal location of the s in This is a matter in the aietooinipitent to longer submit to Webope theiefore that Mr. Fielilng during his present visit will apply his well-known executive abiiiiy aid inteli‘ federal services.
