I I Weure now very close upon the time when‘ navigation will be open to the Steam Navigation Companfs boats from, both Charlottetown and Summerside to the ports of the Mainland. The time dur- ing which we have been dependent on the winter stermers has been this year .l_ong'or_ than in some previous years, but not much greater than the average, which ranges from fourteen to sevtnteen weeks. Should the"Princess go on her regular trips to-day it will be about 16 weeks from the date of her laying up last? fall. we have open ravigation while during about four months we are dependent upoi, winter steamers fitted fcr forcing their way through the ice. The ` steamer com- munication during the open season .is so good as to leave little more to be expected or desired in the way of regularity or con- venie nce. _ But the experience of last winter shows that notwithstanding' u e have now two winter steamers our com- munication is liable to be cut oil for weeks at a time during the cold season. It is therefore dun ing the months to come that we must take thought for next winicr`s business. We have watched with interest the claims put forward on behalf of the Sum- rnerside-Tormentine and the George town- Picton routes respectively and will not enter upon that now.But another ques-tier also presses for solution, and that is whether it is not quite practicable for one or both of the winter Steamers to keep open throughout the winter, the direct route from Charlottetown to Picton. There are many who believe this to be feasible. When Hillsboro Bay is frozen over and a track once broken through the it o there and into Charlottetown harbor it would seem that the boats might ply with less danger of long interruption than hop-_ pened on the Georgetown route last win- . ter. <__.__¢_l_1_ _ The Nova Scotia Legislative Council still refuses to be abolisl\e:l,notwithstand- ing that since 1334 every new member _ap- pointedhas been pledged to abolitifb_n.‘ Every member of should be mulcted- fin damxges forbreach of promise of aboli- tion. -.
