Beautifully white is the white, light

THE IDEAL MAN, ~
The ideal is the standard' of perfec-
tlou.It is oftener a mental conception,
rather than an objective reality. One
does not rise higher than his' own
idea of - perfection. For, like our
shadows, our ideals advance as we
move forward. Hence the value of
high ideals.
The ideal is formed by taking
best from the best and leaving the
rest. The ideal statesman, poet or
preacher is not a Gladstone, Tenny-
son, or Spurgeon, but acomposite of
the highest qualities of the best in-
dividuals in each class, without their
limitations and imperfections, thus
forming an imaginary, but not im
possible person.
No where man measures up to this
standard. WhereL then, is the answer
to our aspirations? History, science
and philosophy furn sh us.no clue.
Gloom has settled over the soul Of
man. Glimpses of the Possible, the
Perfect, vanish in the ever deepening
sense of failure, the ever increasing
fear of offended Deity, the ever en-
croaching tide of despair!
When lol a star appears in the
East and rests over a cave in Beth-`
lehem directing the gaze of the.
world to a little Babe, born in a
stable, cradled in a manger.
That Babe so helpless, so sweetli'
sleeping, guarded by a rnother's ten-
der love, grows to maturity, unerr-
ing, among the erring, sinless among
the sinning, follows the path of love
and duty, even when it leads straight
to the Cross.. He redeems humanity,
triumphs over death, and returns to
Heaven where He is received by the
Perfect Ones w ith ioyous acclaim,-

near Matinlcus, twelve miles oil the

crew of five, together with Mrs. W.
Peacock, wife of the cook, after some
difficulty, landed on Large Green
