Engineering illustrates in great detail the disappearing guns which were dis- covered by the balloonists sent up from Bu11er’s position across the Tugela, and suddenly checked the progress of his third project for relieving Ladysmith. These guns were designed specially with a view to be easily carried on wheels, and to form movable armament in a series of distinct positions com- municating with each other by a. single road. They are, in fact, highly mobile 1 "guns of position,” and as Engineering remarks, a limited number of them is sumcient to defend a largely extended front, as at the Tugela. The various parts are so arranged that accordingto circum- stances firing can be effected while the carriage stands on its wheels, or after it has been placed on bolsters provided in advance at suitable points, or in trenches. While they are mounted on wheels, they have the usual lever for raising and lower- ing the weapon. Thislevercarries the gun at one end on trunnions, while the other end is pivoted to the side, where- in also is the recoil cylinder. Thus, when the lever is raised from a hori- zontal to a vertical position, the gun is @lifted high enough to shoot over the ‘parapet, and the recoil, upon its dis- charge, brings it back to its lowest posi~ tion ready for a new charge. When the gun isto act as a disappearing weapon, it. is taken, as illustrated in Engineering, to one or other of a. series _ot bolsters or circular bearing frames boltedto the door of trenches, eto,, the centre of the bearing being curved up- wards, with s dat top, and having a projection round theiodgc, which nts into grooves onthe bottom of the gun carriage. It this way the whole gun, wjheels and all, can be rotated up the bolster, which thus really forms a cen- tral pivot. The changc from a. dcld gun to a. disappearing gun of position ca.nbeel1`ected inless than half an hour. This is the method adoptedvithguns ot lditferent.callbre;.lJut the one which has donetgreatest our toroes is the T4-7-inch wealklll-, Thisgun weighs about 15 tons-3,0& lbs, while the carriage weighs 8,818 lbs. The proiectile is of 46 lbs, and is tired with a muzzle velocity of 1,639 feetpersecond. Even on its mount as a disappearing weapon it can be trained througha complete circle, while it' can be elevated from 15 degrees above the horiz0ntalto5 degrees below it. Engi- neering also ilustrat/es a 3-5-inch gun which is similarly used either as a iield _or disappearing gun. It weighs 1.168 lbs.,and its carriage 2,645-lbs. It tires a 17=_lb. shot at a velocity of 1,508 feet per second. A S. S. ‘LES$0N. _‘Qi _ ii - APRIL 8. » PRECEPTS AND PROHISES.
