CHRISTINE SUNK IN
ST. LAWRENCE RIVER.
QUEBEC, Que., May 19.- Eight
lives ycrc lost of a crew of fourteen
when the government steamer Chris-
tine was rammed and sunx off the ls-
land of Orleans shortly after dark
last evening by another craft.
The stricken boat .sank in three
minutes and the crew in that time
was unable to launch a lifeboat, or
don life perscrvers, but six being sav-
ed by the other vessel. Captain Kell-
nedy who is one of thc survivors is
Lord Strathcona’s private yacht, but
owned by J. S. Tllom of this city, was
chartered by the naval authorities and
performed the duties of an examina-
tion steamer.
She was lilaklng her usual rounds
when the collision occurred.

MONTREAL, May 21.--Just as the
Present war has upset and overturn-
ed all previous calculations and pre-
cedents as to human slaughter; just
as it has shoved back and regaled to
the attlcs of memory the world-famed
wonder-batteries of the Plains of
Marathon, the Pass of Thermopylea
and the field of Cressy to replace
them. by those at Liege, Ypreg and
Langemarcir' so has it dimmed and
filmed over the remembrance of the
Ssprtan tether. and the nwnier of me
Grachl, who for centuries stood out as
the great examples of patriotic self-
sacrifice.
And here, there and every-
where' in Britain, the heart of the
empire, in far-oil’ India and Australia,
in frozen Russia, in gay Frallce, ill
desolate Belgium. and last but not
least in Canada itself other 'fathers
and mothers have loomed up whose
patriotic example of sacrifice in offer-
.lng up what is nearest and dearest to
them to the insatiable .Iuggernaut of
war, eclipse everything that history
has recordd in til past.
Take the case of Madame Patry, of
2002 St. Dominique street, for in-
stance. it is only one ol' a thousand
where the notice of death or injury
has struck swift like lightning;
but through its particular circum-
stances, it might be almost looked up-
on as a test case of' the heroic patrio-
tic way in which Canadian mothers
make their dreadful sacrtitlces. and
are ready to go on offering from their
store of sturdy soils, till there are
none left or the empire cries
enough.
Madam Patry sent two sous to
the war. Henri and Napoleon, both
belonging to the 65th ,regiment to
which their father, now 06 years
old, belonged for forty years.
A third son. Edmond, is leaving
shortly for the front with one of
the medical corps, and a. fourtll
son, Osias, now on picket duty at
the Lacliine Canal also wants to go.

There is no doubt that The Guar-
dian’s plan of distributing flags to its
readers has struck a responsive chord
in the minds of every man, woman and
child in the city as evidenced by the
‘crowds which besieged the oflice from
early until late, carrying away the flag
of our country,
They were pleased crowds too, many
opened and inspected their flag outfits
right in the office and then wanted an
additional one. for never has such an
,exceptionally fine flag been offered
complete with the outfit on such ad-
vantageous conditions.
The supply of flags secured for this
city is large and it is the purpose of
this newspaper to supply them to
readers until every citizen has secured
ment of his Iiome on gala ooccaslons,
and at times when patriotism dictates
hoisting the Union Jack.
These elaborate outfits were found
by everyone who received them to be
exactly as represented, if The Guar-
dian erred ln past description it erred
by not praising the splendid outfit
enough.
The Union Jack ranks in beauty and
tradition as the grandest flag which
ever flew from the masthead, and its
possession is a thing to he desired by
all. Tile flags offered by Tile Guar-
dian are of large size, from end to
end as tall as a tall mail. The pole is
carefully finished and vamished. It is
jointed by a brass terrule in the
middle for convenience of storing, and
having two eyelets for threading the
halyards and a stout metal socket for
holding it to the window sill. Two
strong grommets are inserted in the
heavy canvas foot of the flag for
attaching the lialyard. The whole
outfit is carefully boxed in small
compass.
Especially important is the fact that
the colours of this flag are dyed into
the hunting, fast and brilliant, render-
ing it an emblem of long lasting
qualities.
Although the value of the outfit is
$4.00 this newspaper, combining witll
tile leading dailies of other cities,
managed to secure them for its
readers at a small expense which just
about represents the cost of assemb-
ling the outfit and distributing it.
There arc no difficult terms to comply
with, merely clip the coupon which
appears on another page of this issue
and present it at this office together
with the small expense amount men-
tioned in another part of this paper.
