FROM SUBHARINES.
One of the most interesting techni-
cal questions of the war, just now, is
whether there is any possible means
of defence against the submarine, and
a writer in the Scientific American
makes the following attempt to ans-
wer the question:
In the first place let it be accept-
ed, once and for all, that if s sub-
marine, and particularly _one of the
German type, can get within point-
blank range of the enemy, the ship
attacked will either be sent to the
bottom or its days of military use-
fulness will be over for many long
months to come. One of the most
striking evidences of 'German tore-
thought was their designing of u
special submarine torpedo. having a
limited range of only 1,200 yards,
high explosive in the warhead. The
but carrying no less than 420 lbs. of
fact that every warship which has
been struck by German subiizuriiie
torpedoes has gone to the botto-ii
(our American contemporary, it will
lic noted. takes this for grunted.-

of the terrible efficiency of these mu-
pons,
may he sought both in the defensive
nnd offensive direction, (ine of the
principal efforts of naval construct-
ors for many years past has been to
afford such effective defensive protec-
tion, by mesns of extensive subdiv-
ision below 'the water-line that the
inflow of water from a torpedo ex-
plosion would be limited-so limited,
in fact, that the ship would remain
afloat and proceed to port under its
own steanr. The rapid sinking of the
Aboukir, Cressy, llogue . _ _ has
shown beyond all disputation that
the submarine, if it once gets mas-
tery even of the most modern and
largest of worships. It is our opiii-
ion thnt, no matter to what extent
subdivision may be carried or how
great a part of che displacement is
sacrificed to torpledo-defence coffer-
dums or compnrtmfents-in view of
the increased size of the submarine,
its increasing speed, and the possi-
bility ol yet further increase in the
explosive charge of its torpedoes, it
will be impossible to render the war-
ship of the future safe or even rea-
sonably protected against submarine
attack.
The speed of the submarine is gen-
erally so low ns compared with that
of modern warships that the chances
of getting within firing range are
very much smaller than the average
layman would suppose. One of the
principal lessons learned in this war
is flint high speed find quick manoeu-
vriug of the strip attacked, combined
with a sharp lookout from the mast-
head, are ii most edectipe protect-
ion. In calm weather, when the sen
is fairly snzooth, the course of the
perlscope of u submarine is ciearly
discernible by the long white streak
which it leaves behind. Naval men
will tell you that even when the per-

a certain disturbance of the surface
of the water, indicating the presence
of a moving submerged body.

es of the submarine being sunk by

The difficulty of detecting ii sub-
marine increases 'as the water grows
rougher, und it will he renicmhcred

large ships have been made in stor-
my weather. The wash of the peris-
cope then becomes very difficult. to
detect.
By frir the most hopeful method of
protection against this insidious
form of nttnck is to be found,
strnuu'e to sity, in a new form of na-
vnl warfare and observation the dir-
igible and the aeroplane. Experi-
mcnts by American aviators during
the occupation of Vern Cruz and ut
other points have showin that it is
possible to detect ii submarine, when
the observer is two or three thous-
and feet in the air, at depths below
the surface of the water which are
positively surprising, the marine be-
ing visible in clear and calm water
at ii depth of fifty to one hundred
feet. Now ii submarine which is con-
terr-'ilnting rin attack has to keen
pretty close to the surface so as to
"poi~poise" us it is culled, swiftly
rind frequently, to take a perlscopic
peep at the enemy. In rough water
vision is not so good, but the sub-
marine can still be seen. Now here
is ii means of defence, the import-
nnce und possibilities of development
of which can scarcely he overestima-
ted. A squadron of aeroplanes thrown
out in reeonnaissnce nheud of the
fleet would, in any but thick or stor-
my wcathen, be an admirable defence
ngninst an sneniy which "needs only
to he seen" to he laughed nt.

testing various poisons io discover the
most efficient means ol` eradicating
this troublesome weed from lawns.
but although others have been found
satisfactory, the common salt is best
for general use. as there is no danger
accompanying its application.
The dcpartment's specialists say
that much effort is wasted in inerely
cutting off llie dandelion top witlioui
applying some poison to the root that
remains. ’l`he daiidellon has a lop
root that grows deep into the soil. mid
cutting ofl' thc plant merely encour-
agg_s the dandelion to conic up in ii
thicker growth.
The time to erndicnic dandelions
is in the Spring before the plant has
had time to form seed. The seed
spreads rapidly. blown by the wind.
The blossoms should be close mowu
before they have gone to seed. and
salt should then he applied io each
root. A man may be very diligent in
caring i`or his own lawn and yer havi-
seeds blown in from neighboring

with well rooted manure or fertilizer
in the Fall. and by reseeding in thin
places. The second method. advised
in extreuie instances, is to start all
over again. l’low up the liiwu flrsi
(or spade it if the area is snmll).
A generous amount of well rotted
manure should then be worked into
the soil. but not fresn manure. for
that is full of' weed seeds ready io
germinate. In case manure is not
available, coniuierciiil fertilizers may
be used. Many lawn soils are ln need
of lime and it is often ii wise plan to
use it, especially if white clover ls to
be sown. After plowing, the land
should be liarrowed or raked fre-
quently to reduce it to ii good seed
bed condition. Tlils will encourage
the early germination of weed seeds
with the subsequent extermination of
the seedlings. Thorough cultivation
at this period wlll destroy the dande-
lion plants. both those that come
from roots and seeds. After following
either of the two plans sketched here.
the lawn should be maintained in good
condition. by careful mowing, rolling
and watering.
Spraying with iron sulphate solu-
tion to kill dandclions without kllllng
the grass is not reconiniended by the
department. although lt has been
tried by some who consider it suc-
cessful. Experlmcnts do not seem to
establish lt as a practical method.

erican plant, linving been introduced
from Europe several centuries ago.
It was first introduced ln the East
and has spread westward with our
emigration. The weed ls common all
over Europe. and has gone into other
lands with settlers from ilie older
communities of man.
The name “daudollon" is said to
come from the French "Dent de
Lion," which menus tooth of lion. and
refers io- the tooth shaped edges of
the leaf of the plain.
The dandelion is widely used
throuizliout Europe as s truck crop.
Certain foreigners recently arrived in
America have continued to use the
plant as a vegetable and Italians ln
the neighborhood of large cltles have
made considerable proflt by _gatlfer
ln; and taking lt to market..
Several places around Boston now
grow the dandelion as a truck crop.
The seeds are sown ln July or August
fn rows 12 inches apart. and although
the plants are of good size in .the Fall
they are not generally gathered for
the market until early ln the spring.
As soon as the snow is off the ground
the crops are gathered and for a time
the fariiiers receive from $1 to $1.25
a bushel for these greens. By May
the price has fallen to about 50 cents
a bushel, and then tho ground ls plow-
ed up to make room for other vege-
tables, as the dandelion is no longer
profitable.
Another weed that injures the
beauty of many lawns ls the plan-
taln. of which there are two varieties:
the buckthorn, or rfb grass. and the
