Charlottetown, Oct, 3, 1995, Sale THE sT, JOHN EXHIBITION, =— | sheep aud cattle has achieved. With 34 | eutries in this exhibition, hecarried off 31 | prizes and a diploma, “Tulloch Farm” hus thus sustained the reputation it won | at the recent exbibition at Charlottetown. The Senato~, who is an experienced breed- er, goes in for Galloway cattle as the breed hest adapted all round to the needs of the i greater part of the Maritime Provinces. | The Galloways are the oldst distinct breed | of cattle in the United Kingdom, and were originally dun or grey in color, but for the , last forty years the Scotch breeders have | | bred from black colored animals alto- | gether. The Red Norfulks are of the same family, but the taste of the Koglish breeders led them to breed a red var iety. Rearcd on richer soil and in more ferule rgions than the Gallo- ways, the Red Norfolks are now the larger cattle. All Senator Ferguson’s Galloways are jet black, Their hair is long and thick, and that close to the body has the sofiness of silk. “I can get from $10 to $15 more fur a Galloway hide,” said the Sena‘or, “than fur that of any other Lreed, so you see that is an impor- tunt item in their favor.” The cattle mu-t be killed before they are long stabled to realize this price, as when kept anything like a longer period under cover they in jure the value of the hide by scratching oif the hair in places. Then they are easy to feed and are better grazers than any other cattle in the country They can stay out later in the autumn, and will eat the coarser grasses in the fields that the Ayrshires and Shorthorns will not touch. It therefore takes less Jand to pasture them. They do not have horas, which ia the eves of many people is another great advantage. Their milk is as rich in qual- ity as that of the Jerseys, and the yield is a good one in quantity. Sedator Ferguson shows some magnificent looking specimens of these cattle—bulls, cow and heifers— which have attracted much more than ordinary attention, lu sheep he shows Shropshire Downs in quantity, One fine animal is a ram vought from Robert Davies at the Toronto exhibition, and another is the ram “Tar- tar,” of his own breeding, which the Senator has ju t soll to W.W, Hubbard, of Sussex. The Shropshires are hardy sheep, with aclose, short woul that sneds the snow €asily. ‘So warm is their natural covering that they can sleep out of doors all night in adry snowstorm without in- jury; in fact, they prefer it to staying un- der cover, Some of the Senator’s sheep have had the average of 10 lbs. at 4 shear- ng. Senator Ferguson said the animals he brought here were, with three e>¢°- tione, not these shown at the recent Char lottetowa exhibition, but were drafted from his farm, He could send along a third draft if necessary. He took 15 individual prizes at Charlouetown for sheep out of 18 entries, and 12 prizes out of 18 entries herc—all that were uff red in the class. Ta:king of the sheep trade, Setiator Fer- guson said nothing could be worse than the manner in which Prince Elward Is- jand conducted the business, In tead of eelling their little lambs to the Americans at a very low figure, thercby sending away so much raw material, the farmers -houlds fecd them till they were yearlings »nd then send them to the English and West India markets, where they would bring remunerative prices. ‘Keep the lambs and grow less oats,” was his advice. “I buy nry oats now cheaper than I can raire them. ’ Hon. Senator Fergu-on, in addition to a host of prizes for cattle and sheep, car- ried of a prize for the horses he exhibited. (St. John Gazette). Senator D. Ferguson, of Charlottetown, P. E. L., made 34 entries at our exhibition and secured 30 cash prizes and diplomas. This is a great showing and the Senator feels justly — of his exhibit which embraces 26 Shropshire down sheep, 16 head of Galloway cattle and a bandsome pair of matched mares fur agricultural purposes, In Shropshire sheep out of 18 prizes awarded, Mr. Ferguson captured 12 for his showing. At Charlottetown fair Jast week be took 14 oat of 18 awards. Mr. Ferguson has lis stock founded on Ontario al Dealing! PROTECTION To the Public! Several ¢f our competitors, who cant themselves honest men, are again engaged | Anton Lonie Dahi, | vatory of music in New York city, has ap- ahd to-day all his sheep are registered in the Fleck book of the American Breeders Associaton. The Gallomay cattle are aleo based on ioportations from Scotland. The Fergu son Galloway bas as points of merits their hardine-a, superior quality of beef and the value of hides for robes, ete. In this re- spect, the Galloway, it is said, even sur- masses the now extinet buffalo. In a conversation with a Gazette report- er, Senator Ferguson said he was greatly pleased with toe fairplay used at this ex- hibition, and hoped that it would prove a financia] suecess' He expressed his de light at the exhibit of industries, and sai that the show surpassed in many ways ex- hibitions of lager cities.
