This u very true saying of Old Mother Nature's. interfering with other folks almost always means trouble. and in the end it seldom pals. Some folks seem never to learn this. Chatterer the Red squirrel is one of these. it was just by chance that Chatterer had wandered over near the home of Gray Fox. It was a place lie had not visited for a long time. He got there mostly by way of the tree tops; for that is the Way that Chatter- er likes best to travel. Chatterer knew of the hollow old log that uas now the home of Gray Fox. He had known of it for a long time. but he had not visited it since the fall before, and at that time no one was living there. The little Foxes heads a little farther out. poked their Now Chatterer dearly loves to poke about in hollow logs. He is always looking for new places to make into storehouses if need be. This old log was so big that he. never used it as I storehouse. He couldn't begin to fill it even if he tried. This is one reason he had not been over there for so long However, being there he must have a look in it. He jump-g ed over to a tree growing beside l the old log and was just start- ing down when he got a startling surprise. A sharp face sudden- ly was thrust out of the end of that old log. Then another ap- peared beside it. He knew at a izl:in(-o that those sharp faces WPl'I' Fox faces and that they more iint the faces of the children of lli-rtriy Fox. ”lt must be that Gray Fox is him: in this old log, and those are his children," thought Chat- 1-I"'r He looked sharply this on and that way. Gray Fox was iiimliei-e to be seen. "They are so young I have nothing to be afraid of from them. and I probably could make them afraid of me. It will be fun to scare the child- ren of Gray Fox." Chatterer ran down the trunk of the tree. but was careful to make no noise in doing it. He crept out on a low branch that was just over the heads of the three little Foxes. and suddenl, screamed. You know, Chatterer has a very noisy tongue, and he dearly loves to use it. Now the little Foxes never had mj ITANHOPI SCHOOL . . Report of Staiihope School Ioii the month of June. Grade IX-1. At that sound. which was so unex- pected and startling. all three turned tail and scampered back inside the hollow log. There they felt safe. Chatterer chuckled. He changed his position. He went back to the trunk of the tree and hid behind it where he could peep around it and watch. Presently he saw a small face at the doorway. The small eyes were wide with ex- citement and curiosity. A mo- ment later there were two faces peeping out. and then three. Chat- terer kept still.
