Out of the wealth of modern critical discussion cor- tain common convictions have emerged: that purely professional and technical courses as preparation for the "qood llfo" are inadequate; that the physical sciences by no means consti- tute the only road on which truth may be an- proached. that the value of the humanities in a world which appears to have succumbed al- most entirely to a pagan materialism has been affirmed again and again. "The necessity of bringing labout the recon- ciliation of science and the humanities," says Dr. Trueman, "has been so firmly stressed that there can be no doubt nf the general belief that neither of these two great branches of learn- ing should be allowed to dominate the univers- .ity curriculum to the neglect or exclusion of the other.
