In the air, the Allies have been supreme. The raids on England have been fewer and the damage done infinitely less. On the other hand, the Allied airplanes have successfully bombarded'German towns, doing. immense damage to railways, munition factories and army stores. '~ In Canada the new Military Service Act has worked most satisfactorily, and already the 100,000 additional men aimed at have been secured without calling upon the nineteen year class. Many of the Canadians have gained distinction, among them not a few Islanders. , Altogether the year that has gone has been one of steady progress in the war, and the prospects now are that in the year we are just entering upon, the Huns will be on the defensive, while the Allies will steadily press towards Berlin. Since May the Prime Minister of Canada, Sir Robert L. Borden, accompani- ed by several of his Cabinet, has been in London attending the Imperial Conference. Sir Robert has had a great reception and has been consulted by Mr. Lloyd George and the War Cabinet on all phases of the war policy. So much reliance do the Im- perial Government place on Sir Robert’s advice and judgment that they have urged him to remain in London for some time io assist them in their work, both as regards , I the present policy and also regarding peace and after-war problems. _ Sir Robert also visited the western front where he addressed the boys there doing their bit. He had an enthusiastic welcome from both officers and men. The Guardian has received a sketch of the incident from Pte. Max Murphy, “our own artist at the front,” and hopes to have the pleasure of reproducing it at an early date.
