It is pointed out by an exchange that Sir William C Macdonald’s princely benefactions to McGill bave not obliged him to draw very largely on his savings. He is still the largest holder of bank stocks in Canada, figuring in the returna just pub- lished for $150,000 in the Candadian Bank of Commerce, $150,000 in the Merchants Bank of Cavada, and $410,000 in the Bronk of Montrea!; a total of $710,- v00,the market valueof which is con- siderably over a million and a half. His income from this source alone is over fifty thousand dollars a year and as he ie sup~ posed to make something out of his tobacco factory and other investments bis aggregate wealth is probably increasing uwotwith~ standing his large gifts to education. On Easter Saturday the Cardinal Arch- bishop of t'ome raised to the priestbood, among many others from all parts of the civilized world, the Rev. J. T. Murphy, of the Diocese of Charlottetown. He has spent a year in an Austrian university, and his vacations in the various countries of Europe, mak- ing @ special etudy of Janguages.
