Grim-visaged truly is war, glorious war, as it is so mis-named by the poet, that dread scourge which has entailed untold suflering upon the human race, which has depopulated kingdoms and empires, and has laid waste the fairest and most prosperous tracts of this beauti- ful earth, transforming a thriving and flour)... ing community from a state of Mrusperity ard well-being into a deplorably pitiable conditi @ of ruin aad devasiation, the nemesteads pillag- ed and destroyed, the fertile land changed into a wilderness, and the inhabitants subjected to aliehibibs “arrors Ph.the hands of an enraged and exasperated soidiery; . And the change in the soldier himself when eng/¢¢@@ ina sanguin- ary battle is equally startling. A! Petes he may be aman of kindly or even gentile Gié pos tion, who would go out of his way to help a wayfarer who had met with a misfortune, or at inconvenience to himself would assist an unknown sufferer, yet in a hand-to-hand battle he is metamorphosed intoa f rious raging combatant, embued with the one frenzied de- sre to slaughter, his whole self on fire with mad, fierce rage against men whom he had never seen before, and who, personally, had never done him any harm, but whom he now strains every nerve and sinew and muscle to massacre, the greater the bloodshed, the great- er being his ferocity and vehewent impetuosity to kill, until, covered with gore, his own and his enemy’s, he sinks down from the effects of weunds which in h's excitement, in the stress of battle, he had scaréé iotised, But, however terrible war niay be, yet while mankind is Zonstituted as he still is, itis a necessary evil, and the brave soldier of sailot is a hero who deserves well of his country, for he is ready, if need be, to undergo priva- tions, suffering, and even deathi n her defence, and for her sake, and without his aid and the fear inspired by his presence, the countr, would be mercilessly ravaged by her jealous foes, and ruthlessly despoiled of her wealth and _ pros- perity. All honor then to those who are will- ing to enrol as her gallant defenders. It is a strange paradox, that since the invention of moderm weapons of destruction, the loss of life at battles is not riearly so great in proportion to the number of men engaged as formerly, when the combatants were armed with sword and spear, The greatest number killed recorded of any battle ever fought, occurred at the great battle of Zemaraim, when Abijah, King of Judza, with an army of 400,0c0, slaughtered 500,000 of his enemy’s host cut of a total of 800,000 (II Chronicles xiii 17, Josephus nt Jews lib vii. cap, ii.) This compares with the number killed and wounded at the battle of the Alma, which was 8,400 only, or about eight per cent, of the total number engaged on both sides. At the battle of Cressy, when the bow and arrow was the principal weapon, 31,200 men were placed hors de combat, or twenty-seven percent. In the Crimean way it is stated that eighty-nine millions of sitets were fired, 120,000 men being killed, bemg an average of 740 bullets fired for each man killed. In the Franco- German war, the 4sermans fired off 30,000,000 rifle cartridges and 363,000 rounds of artillery, killing or mortally wounding 77,002 French, equalling about 40@shots fired to each man killed. But as the great principles of Christianity become more and more ingrained upon the nations, so war becorses jess and less ciel. Now the Christian doctrine to love oar enemies is-adopted in: a literal sense, and the enemy’s wounded are tended and cared for, and their suflerings assuaged with as much assiduity as if they had not Leen enemies. The use: of missiles whizh inflict needless pain, explosive bullets, and sach like, is universally prohibited by an agreement amongst all Christian nations, whose beneficent example is also followed by nations, as Japan, who so far have not yet altogether adopted the Christ- iam religion. The great aim now isto dis- able, not to kill outright, and, having wound- ed, to heal. But notwithstanding all this, war must ever be an exhibition of savagery and cruelty, and all nations worthy of the name of being great and. brave are now mutual- ly doing their utmost to avert such an awful calamity, and by acting together in reciprocal agreement, to check any outbreak of' national passion which might plunge the civilized races ef the world in a strife which, were it to break out, would probably far exceed in magnitude any war which has-ever taken place on the earth. But until that halcyon time arrives) when swords shall be turned into ploughshares, and spears into pruning hooks, and nations shall not learn war any more, the gaunt form of the dread ghoulish spectre must ever be hovering over us, threatening tu dedulge us with blood, and to clam as its prey vast hecatombs of helpless victims. Let then the orisons of Christendon be raised with redouble enrnest- ness for the advent or the Prince of Peace, when concord and harmony shall reign un- broken from pole to pole, and discord and strife shall be banished from: the face of the earth, Sovereign Cocoa Wine is pleasant to take, is certain and gratifying in its effect in Cases Of loss of sleep and enervation.
