Another College term has just closed. The work has steadily advanced under the ‘nstruction of our able faculty. The stu- lents are looking forward impa'iently to the opening up of the campus. The Athletic Association has resolved to ex- pend a large sum on fitting up the campus. fennis, the popular summer game, is re- ceiving an extra amount of attention. A new football field is to be jaid out for the next season. Our College paper, the Atheneum, has been enlarged, and at- tempts are being made to raise ite standard still higher. From last fall up to the pre- sent date the students have worked hard at the gymnasium under the able direction of Prof. Shaw. Physical culture was the aim of this capable instructor, and not mere proficiency in acrobatic feats. Most approved methods of training were intro- duced. Class work was made the basis of hie system. All the work was aecompanied by music. A. class composed of young ladies of the college was instituted by the enterprise of Prof. Shaw. On the 17th a gymnastic exhibition of the winter's work was given in College Hall under the eye of the faculty. The following was the programme : Free work, leg and shoulder exercises, breathing exercises—Sophomores and Fresh- men, Wand Drill, head and torso exercises— ies’ class. Roberts’ dumb bell drill—Seniors and Jan- iors. March—Sophomores and Freshmen. Exercises on the Horse. re Exercises—Pizicatti dumb bell adies’ Class. Wand Twists—Seniors and Juniors. Work on Parallels. Pole Drill—Sophomores and Freshmen, Delsarte Drill— Ladies’ Class, (a) Swaying. (b) Relaxing. (c) Stretching. (d) Statue Poses. Fancy March—Seniors and Juniors. Club Swinging— Selected Class. Back Work—By an awkward Squad. Pyramids. The Hall was crowded with eager spec- tators for some time before the exercises opened. At 8 0’clock the sophomores and freshmen marched into the body of the hall, separated and went through the ‘*free w rk” without a break. They formed in line and marched out. At once the ladies’ class entered from the oppoeite door and took their places for the wand drill. The exercise vas well done. No. 3 was was successfully executed. The march by the sophomores and freshmen was a prom- inent feature of the evening. The class moved as one. Every man carried himself like a soldier. Many of the movements were very pretty and difficult, and elicited applause trom the audience. Some diffi- cult teats were done on the horse by a sel- very prettily exeented. Work on the parallel bars wae done by a selected class, commenced at the easiest and worked up to the hardest. Some of .the feats showed great strength and agility. The poll drill of the sophomores and freshmen was a hard exercise but well done. The delsarte drill by the ladies was < b the best exercise of the evevinog. e delearte system is built on the sympathy of the mind and body. Prof. Shaw is the only elocutionary essor who has taught this famons system in Nova Scetis, and the beauty of the work was well illustrated this evening. The Jadies were beautifully dressed in white Grecian costumes. The statue posing in particular was grand. The exercise was done in dead silence ex- cept the low and stately notes of the piano. Everything contributed to heighten the effect. The ladies out. amid thundering applause. The fancy march of the seniors and juniors was splendid. The moves were difficult, but were executed without a flaw. No». 12 was.a good exercise, the ladies’ class bein, represented by Mins Patten, '95 The buck work joy an ‘‘awkward squad” was perhaps the mst taking feature of the evening. The squad really consisted of the best gymnasts in the college. The ludicrous manner in which the exercise commenced, compared to the agility and skill displayed later on, made a great effect Feats of tumbling, double tumbling, vault ing, springing, etc., followed one another’in rapid succession. The gentlemen who particularly excelled were Messrs. Mc Curdy, Bill Harding, McFarlane and Quigley. The whole of the performance was continually greeted with thuadering applause. The pyramids were difficult but admirably executed. They lovked beautiful. In con- clusion the classes marched in and formed a W before the platform. On thie platform there arose a beautifully decorated series of stands. Here the ladies took their position gentlemen marched in they hung up 4 banner “Canada Our Home.” A song to the raises of Canada was then sung, ollowed by ‘“‘God Save the Queen,” and amid the burning of a red light and the inspiring college yell of Rah! Rah! Yah! Yah! Yah! Hoorah! Hoorah!! "Cadia!!! the exhibition closed. It was a success in the strongest sense of the word, Acadia has taken her place among the foremost physical educators Nothing of a like nature has ever been given in Canada that can compare with it. Kvery- one isin high spirits and even the faculty— the grave philosophical faculty—has not work they have done, but it is to Prof. Shaw that we muat look for the real cause of its success. We cannot too highly praise the untiring zeal and energy with whih he pushed his work. Acadia feels proud of her son. N. J. Lecanart, "95. Acedia College. erere aature andeffects. We understand a company of horsemen have imported a finely bred, standard and registered two-year-old Wilkes stallion, He srrived in this city about a week ago in th: Stanley from Pictou. Hus color is a hand some seal brown, and heis of good size, style and action. His sire, Kaiser, 2 284, is one of the best bred and yvungest sons of the mighty George Wilkes, 2 22, whore name ia one of the most famous in the annals of the trotting horse. Without including pacers slower than 225. he has himself 75 list performers, 74 of his sons sired 488, and 34 daughters produced 42. It was « si¥-rear uld grandson of George Wilkes that sired the first yearling to trot under 230. Fair Lady, dam of Kaiser, died at 8 years old, and left only three foals—all trotters, viz , L’Emperer, 2.25; Kaiser, 2.284; and Noblesse, 2.31. Her sire was Dictator, sire of Jay-Eye- See, 210; Phallas, 2 13g; and Director, 2 17, sire of Direct, 2.06 pacing, the fastest har- ness performer in the world. The Dictators are noted for their bull-dog courage in fight. ing arace. Kaiser's second dam was Monie West, by Almont; she ia the dam of Dictator, jr., trial mile 219, sire of Hill Boy, 2.274 p., and another of her produce took a record of 2.284 the t season. It will thus be seen that Kaiser has a rich inheritance of the best blood that stands high in the records, and besides he is himself a performer and a sire of speed at an early age, and with increasing years cannot but make a name second to none of the best sons of George Wilkes, a horse whose blood 785 trotters in the 2 30 list carry. Somuch for the breeding of the sire of this scion of the Wilkes sfamily which has found its way to our shores. His dam is Nellie by Bellwood, by Woodford Mambrino;’race record, 2.214; 80n of Mam- brino, Chief Sire of Lady Thorne, 2 18}, and others, and the dams of many fast ones. The dam of Bellwood was one of the most celebrated mares in the brood mares list She was the grest Mambrino Chief Mare, Belle, dam of Belmont, sire of Wedgewood, 2.19; Nntwood, 2 183, and 36 others. She was also the dam of Hambletonian, 1644; record 2 264, sire of 15 trotters; of Lucas Broodhero, sire of 4; and her daughter Bicara produced 4 standard performers, including Pancoast, 2213, sire vf 13 and grandsire of 5. The dam of Woodford Mambrino, sire of Bellwood, was another great mare, Woodbine, dam of Wedgewood, 2.19; four of her sons sired 3i performers and a daughter produced a trotter record 2 28 and a pacer 2194 Nellie’s dam was by Greyhound, 2.31, full brother to Laura Williams, 2 244 and Char’ey Mack, 2 25. The sire of Greyhouad was Black Hawke, 5, sire of the great Ethan Allen, 2 254, sire of six and grandsire of ninety-six. Alcogether there are five dams in the pedigree of thie colt whose names are to be found in the ‘* Great brood mares’ list.” Aud this does not in- clude the dams of (ieorge Wilkes and Almont. The igree that is especially strong ia great mares is always more highly valued than one without such a distinction. This young stallion should do much to improve the blood of the trotting horse on this Island, His owners are to be complimented in in- ected class. The ladies work of No. 6 was | troducing so finely bred an individual to this province. THE REASON why ‘*‘ Myrtle Navy” to- bacco has taken so strong a hold upon the smoking community is because it is the genuine article. Noman has a desire to smoke anything else than tobacco, Even opium is not smoked for the pleasure of smoking it, but for its soporitic effects. The desire for tobacco is, of course, best satisfied by getting the pure article, and when to this is added the finest quality the satisfaction is complete. These two things are combined in the **Myrtle Navy” * JOURNALISTIC —The Messenger and Visiter, pub ished at St John, N. £.. has lately donned a new dress of type, and now pre- sents a splendid appearance.
