Sir George William Ross, Kt., Liberal leader in the Canadian Senate, statesman, iournalist and author, was born near Nain, in Mid- dlesex County,‘ seventy-two years ago today, Sept. 18, 1841. 1-lis pa- rents, James Ross and Ellen McKin- non, were natives of Ross-shire, Scotland. Ho was educated in Tor- onto Normai School, and _at Toron- to University and St. Andrew’s, Scotland. His first employment was as a pedagogue in what he has de- ' scribed as "the little red' school-' house at the cross roads." He he- csmo an inspector of public schools and of model schools, and also took occasional journalistic flights. As a edited the Strathroy Age, and later the Huron Expositor and the Onta- rio Teacher. His parliamentary car- eer commenced in 1872, when be was elected from West Middlesex, and in 1883 he was made Minister of Edu- cation. He continued to hold that post until 1899, in which yesr he became Premier of Ontario. He was called to the Senate in 1907, and became the Liberal party'g leader in the Red Chamber. Sir Ge rge‘s\rub- lished works include "The Life and Times of the Hon. Alex. Macken- zie," and-"Getting Into Parliament and After." The lsst-named volume of political reminiscences throws 'much light on the Canadian politics of the last forty years.
