An inquest will be held Wed- note whether or not it wears chest- nut on its sides and across its un- dcrparts just a little below the grey-blue band. This extra colour belongs to the female. Why? We can only guess. Nature devised the plan of sombre looking mother birds because they are the parents that care for the nestlings, and en- cmles must not be attracted by I gay appearance. But the home of a Kingfisher is at the end of a tun- nel made in the face of an exposed earth bank. What colour is earth generally? Reddish brown. some- what the colour of Mrs. Kingfish- er's extra markings. So perhaps we understand why she is a gaudy mother. For a very different reason, the three species of Phalarope - Red, Northern. and Wilson's -- have this peculiar, reversed colouring of the sexes. All father Phaiaropes do the household chores, as buildliig the nest and incubating. Conse- quently they are smaller than their wives, and more demurely dressed, so as to he inconspicuous. The fe- male Red Phaiarope in her spring costume is particularly gaudy look- ing: her red is more vivid than her husband's. her white face patch larger and with a more defined outline than his. Mrs. Northern Phalaropeis bib is red, his is fawn colour, flecked with white, grey, or brown. The female of the third spe- cies is richly and uniquely marked. with large black and red stripes on neck and sides. where he simply has a pale chestnut wash. Contrary to the habit of most birds, these females arrive first at the breeding grounds. There they await the coming of the males when they act boldly, carry on with what is known as "display flights", and give special calls to aotract a mate. However. they real- ly aid their partners somewhat in caring for their downy young until they are able to get to a nearby pond. After the surr:-ier moult. the two sexes cannot be told apart - both are plainly garbed. Another unexpected difference in the looks of the sexes is among the Hawks, bLIlI'. this is just in their size. The females of most of the species are from own to four inches longer than the males. We wonder, why this should be. but Mother Nature must have some KOD(I reason. Is mascara fashionable? at. (3. ill re at id ed ii The Neighbors I I I I I I I Z)” 9kx '41!
