K. est movement on the Dart of Russie-is llll Mlllllllllll lilllllllllll 1___. _ _ __A , __ _ MONDAY. JUNE 13. 1900. _ i ~ f A WURD WITH THE “EXAMlNER." The other day the esteemed Examiner, speaking of the recently enacted Prohibi- tion Act said: “The Act to prohibit the Sale of intoxi- cating liquors in a fraud and a humbug." Much of the same sort of denunciation time to time. We deeplyfgegret the fact. eqzoneut and organ of the Conservative party in this Province, but surely it doeul not fairly represent that party in this im- portant matter. The facts are decidedly against any such hasty conclusion and go to show that it is not representative of the party attitude. What are ths facts? That the temperarice organizations, made up of men and women of both parties, the evangelical churches composed ofmeii and vvomendiffering in political opinions, and successive plebiscitesof the electorate em- bracing all shades of religion and political feeling have endorsed the principle of pro- hibition. YVhy then should theExaminer, as a party organ stand out to denounce the very first attempt to crystallise that great principle into law? But the facts go much further than we. have already stated. In the Legislature the representatives of the Conservative party, comprising almost half the jHouse, gave their support to the principle of the Bill. They went, much farther. in proposing and supporting by their votes amendments designed to make it more stringent and effective. And we have seen that in Manitoba the Conservative Premier, Hon. Hugh John Macdonald, son of the greatest Conservative leader that Canada has yet produced, introduced and carried into law a measure framed on the samelines as was introduced and by the Liberal Government here and carried by the joint vote of both parties. THE GUARDIAN claims some right to speak for the prohibitionists of P. E. Is- land and we believe that as a. body they strongly endorse the legislation recently enacted here.We haveinodoubt that some, perhaps many, would gladly have seen a more stringent law enacted, but the gen- eral feeling is to accept what We have got as sound in principle and making a great stride toward advanced temperance legislation. Among scores of letters re~ ceived from prohibitionists in all parts of the Island we have yet to receive the first onc taking other grounds than those just stated, or criticising the law in a hos- tile spirit. We therefore conclude that the Examiner’s hostilityto the Prohibition Act is not inspired by prohibitionists or temperance men within the party of which it is the exponent, and that its attitude of hostility toward the Prohibition Act mis- represents and is calculated to injure the Conservative party before the coun- try. 1,, i-,i _-__ 3 1 _4 EUBELL LINE via North and South Sydney.
