They are prominent residents of our great sister province-men and women whom always we delight to honour. They are descendants of the first people of Canada; and they are members of a Canadian com- ' munity that is well-governed, pros- perous and free. They are of the same great national family as those by whom this Province-mow blossoming as the rose — was first of all redeemed from the wild- erness, and who were admittedly among the best pioneers of our country. Prince Edward Island is greatly indebted to the early labors of the French people; quently, the French people are held in high regard ‘by the men and wo- men of this Province, with whom. worse,“ they have been inextricably united. The Bri- tish and the French together are the chief makers and holders of this Canada of ours; and the blend of the two races will without doubt. give to Canada the distinction among nations which it will possess in the ages to come. As the Saxons and, conse- and Normans were the chief factorsto prove 1L of the British people and of the‘ great empire established by anti maintained by them, so we confi- dently hope and expect that the Bri- tish and French races will, in thi future, combine to gain Canada a high place among the great nations of the world. ‘ In this hope and expectation, we welcome our visitors from Quebec. To know one another, to inter- change thought and suggestion, and‘ to possess an intimate knowledge oi the conditions in_ which the people of the various provinces live and labor are essential to united action towards improvement throughout Canada. Our visitors have shown a poor example. which may well b6 followed by the people of this and other provinces, We hope that the weather will continue to be good and that "a good time" will be en- Joyed by all who have come to this "isle of the sea.” - {m THE NEW GOVERNMENT OW that Mr. A. C. Saunders, thi Premier-elect, is able to sit u1. and take some nourishment, thi government will in all probability be handed into his keeping, this week. With the formal resignation oi Premier Stewart one of the best governments the province has had goes out of office. No serious fault has been found with the Stewart government during its term of office and no successful criticism has been levelled against it. Every pre-election promise with one exception was ful- filled to the letter. The federal claims of the province, studiousiy ignored by Liberal-governments. was successfully pressed and an ad- ditional grant of $165,000 was secured. Notwithstanding this and to satisfy the aspirations of asmall but clam- oroua group, the Stewart Govern- ment has been turned down, it ls true, by a very small majority. Now we are to have a new regime. one carried into office, not because ‘c: any administrative ability evinced _ by its leader, who was associative with the most lamentable adminis- trative failure in the history 0'1 they province. or by the rank and file oi his following. The Saunders Gov- ernment came into office on the die- tinct promise that it would strength- en by amendment and enforce more effectively the Prohibition Act. In a coign of the cliff between low- land and highland, At the sea-downs edge between windward and lee, Walled round with rocks land "island. The ghostrof a garden fronts the asan iri- sea. A girdle ofbrushwood and thorn encloses ' ' ' The steepsquare slope of the bloa- somless bed Where the weeds that grew green from the graves of its roses Now lie dead. . I The fields fall southward, abrupt and broken. To the low last edge of the long lone land. ‘ If a step should sound or a word be spoken, Would a ghost not rise at the strange guest's hand? So long have the grey bare walks lain guestless, Through branches and briars if a man make way, He shall flnd no life but the sea- wind's restless Night and day. The dense hard passage is blind and stifled. That crawls by a track none turn to climb, To the strait waste place that the years have rifled _ Of all but thethorns that are touched not of time. The thorns he spares when the rose is taken; The rocks are left when he wastes the plain. The wind that wanders, the weeds wind-shaken, These remain. Not a flower to be pressed of the foot that falls not; As the heart of a dead man the seed-plots are dry; From the thicket of thorns whence the nightingale calls not, Could she call, there were never a rose to reply. Over the meadows that blossom and wither ' Rings but the note of a sea-bird's t - song; lOnly the sun and the rain come hither All year long. The sun burns sere and the rain disheveis . t One gaunt bleak blossom of scent- less breath. _ Only the wind here hovers and revels In a round where life seems barren , i as death. l-Iere there was laughing of old, r there was weeping, Haply, of lovers none evar will know, - Whose eyes went seaward a hundred sleeping ‘ Years ago. Heart handfast in heart as they stood, "Look thither,” Did he whisper? “Look forth from the flowers to the sea; For the foam-flowers endure when the rose-blossoms wither, And men that love lightly may die —but we?" And the same wind sang and the same waves whitened, i And or ever the garden's last pet- als were shed, In the lips that had whispered, the eyes that had lightened, Love was dead. Or they loved their life through, and then went whither? _ And were one to the end-but what end who knows? ‘Love deep as the sea as a rose must wither, , , ' As the rose-red seaweed that mocks the rose. Shall the dead take thought for the dead to love them? What love was ever as deep as a grave? They are loveless now as the grass above them Or the wave. All are at one_now, roses and lovers.
