THE Guardian of the 2§th publishes a letter from Robert Stewart, J. P., pf Southport, denying that he signed the petition for the commutation of Carver’s death sentence. This denial will be of some interest to peoplelin this vicinity who have been puzzling over the last name on the list of petitioners, “Edward Cullan, Capt Brigt. Hattie Louise." This good ship, which was owned in Summer- side, went to the bottom some years ago and seaman here have no recollection of hearing her captain designated by that name. This competition was decided ir. as impartial a .way as pos- sible by three ladies of the city chosen by the award committee, who visited the numerous booths where tea was being served, their identity as judges being un- known to the several exhibitors. When it is considered that the only tea served ‘at the Vim Tea booth was the grade which retails at 35 cents per pound, Messrs. Bairdand Peters, the packers of this now famous tea, must feel particu- larly gratified at the unanimous decision in favor of their tea Vim. IN Msuonrknr.-On the 14th inst, there p seed away, near Hunter River, Mary the beloved daughterof Roderick McLeod, at the early age of 23 years. She had al- ways lived at home until about six years ago, when she joined some brothers and ; sisters in New England. Last year she came home suffering from a neglected cold, which soon developed into consump- tion. She fought the dread adilction bravely, but although every available re- medy wss tried, it was a losing battle from the drst. Always vivaclous and active, she continued so to the end, and not until ten days before her death could she consent to remain in bed. The funeral service from her home was very largely Millar conducted services, in _ course of _which both alluded to intereresting evi- dences of her possession of a “good hope through grace.” The timely visit of her esteemed uncle Rev. A_ B. McLeod of Coldstream N. S. the week before, had given her very special consolation. Four brothers, and four sisters, with the sor- rowing parents, and a large circle of friends, mourn her loss.
