LONDON, August 4-=Ths Spectator in its issue of yesterday suggests that each dominion should contribute to the imperial naval loan a sum equslling one pound per head of white population which would tide the empire over thc perilous period of the next ten years. It should be a shipbuilding and not a maintenance loan, the admiraltv and imperial de- fense committee to have the frecst possible hand in the distribution of the money. Such a fscherne, the Speceator goes on to say, would put a dampcr on Germauy's extensive na- -,val program as far as contemplates 'an attack on Brit.1in's naval supre- mecy. ri-lg ii-ctr Aa'Loi'r'r‘s:i'r`o was Guan out 7 gona W 7" D K. This is all .the more urgent, ns, under the present excel- lent service of the Veterinary Direc- tor General, a rigid selection in rea- pect to our export -meat trade, both of nnimgls intended for slaughter and of the carcasses at the time of slau- ghter. Thc_ bulk of the ment so slaughtered is cold in foreign ports, but little being disposed df for hon-lc consumption. Already the town of Summerslde has acted upon the suggestion and not a pound of meat is permitted to ‘e sold there which has not been re- 'gularly inspected before and after slaughter. "Phare is always a modicum of truth in the opposing party's creed, and it ls always advisable, even from the selfish standpoint, to recognize this, In our little province we have two political parties. Each has its creed and each has as much right to its creed as if it held it by a legally exe- _cutcd deed. What neither party has u, right to do is to question the title ‘or the bone. fldcs of the other--er cept for cause. Moreover, be it re- membered, the political creed is really ‘known only to the comparative few; the rank and tlla follow the party largely on faith, caring nothing for and knowing nothing of the creed. There are, in the nature of things, two sides to a political policy and good man may differ widely as to the wisdom or unwiadom of a certain course of action, but in a small com- munity like ours there ought to be certain fixed principles upon which both parties should agree. The ad- .vaucement of the province should bs the ilrst consideration and there are` very many points in this connection on which both parties should see eye to eye, forgetting all their other dif- ferences. Unfortunately, at prague, party interests come first' and the claims of the country are a second- srv consideration. The political creedi of many of us is to oppose anything and everything that is proposed or carried out bv the opposite party, ra- gardlcss altogether of what the coun- trv needs. Prince Edward Island cannot afford this. We are face to face with the most critical situation in the history. of the province. For many years we havc.heen losing the cream of our population. CALL T0 THE WEST. 1.....- Sir:-In a recent editorial in the Guardian entitled "The Call from the West" youfcarlessly express the opin- ion that if those who intend going west would properly cultivate a few acres of our Island coll they would derive more money. and have more to fall back on in the evening of their days. Now Mr. Editor it is quite evident that many of the young men who leave our fair province to seek homes in the west and elsewhere are not aware' of the facts you assert, and I sincerely bellevifthat if those who have made well on s few acres would inform all _through the press, they might possibly be the means of inducing many 5, young man to stay on the land who are about to leave may be never to return. There are many farmers throughout this pro- vince who pride in their big farms. Doubtless those farmers have the evil tendency of discouraging those who have not the means to purchase many acres, and so they are leaving one by one, the men that this province most needs. _ ' In conclusion I would suggest that those who are now cultivating small farms either in Prince. Queens or Kings, makeknown through our pa- pers tbe number of acres under culti- vation snd the amount grown on the same. It matters not what branches of farming they have spe- cialized in. We occasionally hear of some one who has made' thousands oil a few acres in the other provinces or in the United States _but why not hear from some one in the Garden ‘of the Gulf? * Also hammer away Mr. Editor, you are doing a. good work, but in the meantime let us hear from some one who is practiclding what you. preach with good results.
