PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND, As Viewed by an American Publisher—An Interestiny Fish Story. The Burlington Daily News, of Vermont contains a long and interesting article des- criptive of Prince Edward Island. As to Summerside the News says: “Summerside is a thriving village of about 4000 inhabitants, once an important place for shipbuilding. It hasan air of life and activity that reminds one of an American town, although easily distin- vuisbed in its main characteristics from the average Yankee village. It has the biggest department store on the Island—R. . Holman’s—a great establishment even fora larger town. The village is growing and improving and will some time rival the capital in size and surpass it in build- ings and enterprise.” The writer continues : “Two things are quickly noticed by @ Vermonter travelliog on the Island—the red soil, a bright terra cotta color, and the total absence of mountains. The former is produced by the disintegration of the bright red sandstone, the Jatter is of course unexplainable. The surface is slightly roliing, but the highest elevation is nos over 500 feet. But if it has co mountains it has valleys. Running across the centre of the Island from north to south is @ sec- tion that is cut into numerous valleys, making a eort of depressed mountain range, the peaks on the average level, the valleys mach below it. This strange for- mation bas not yet been fully explained by geologists. There are many attractions for the tourist on the Island—brancbes all around it, with plenty of opportunity for eafe bathiog; hotels and boarding houses; abun- dance of good fishing, both river and salt water—trout fishing in all the streams, salc water fishing all around the c%ast. The attention of one of the Burlingtonians was faithtully giveu to the rivers on all suitable occasions, and the result . was more than 250 fine trout. The last day’s effurt was especially prolific—a string of 85. We wandered up and down a stream that shall here be nameless, casting our lines with indifferent success for some hours till finally a spot appeared that looked inviting. Creeping up bebind a dwarf bush on the side of the stream the line—loaded with the humble angleworm on three hooks, and flies on two othere— it was just between fly time and bait time --the gut had barely touched the water when the three worms were seized anda quick pull landed three beauties. Suc- cessive cast then brought out one, two and three at a time till the end of 20 minutes saw 45 “speckled beauties” lying on the grass—a eatifactory closing of a success- ful five days day fishing. The annual provincial exhibition was held at Charlottetown while we were on the Island and we visited it. It was a first-class fair, a better one than the ave- rage held in Burlington. There was a@ large display of fruits and vegetables, especially apples and plums, potatoes and turnips, of good size and excellent quality —we have none so good in Vermont. The ‘live stock show was very large and of fairly good quality, with perhaps fewer blooded animals than in Vermont. The chief attraction of agricultural — fairs— horse racing—was not lacking and there was some good trotting. o Secretary Warburton the News is indebted for courtesies on this occasion. Thcusands of Americans now epend their vacations on Prince Edward Island and the number is constantly growing as the delights of a sojourn here are becom- ing known. There is nothing that the tired being wants that cannot be found here—a mild and pleasant climate, good board at reasonable prices, excellent fi=h- ing and shooting, good beaches and bath- ing and rest.” The publisher of the Burlington Daily News, and writer of the above is Mr. Joseph Auld, who is, if we mistake not, a native of this Province. We have to thank him for his kindly notice of this “gem of the Northern Sea.” Rich RED BLOOD is the foun- dation of good health.
