A well- ! to-do peasant went to Warsaw from his native village to so some shop- ping. At the market he heard two men discussing the bad times. One man said he had decided to emigrate in the United States. The other man was not impressed. and assured him that America was no use now for those seeking fortunes, and that the moon was in be the next great para- dise for ambitious emigrants. The peasant opened his big ears wider, and heard what wonderful things had been written in the news- papers about airshlps and projectiles going to the moon. Apparently, that poetic planet had already been reach- ed. and revealed land rich with gold this hiahly interesting discussion. he soon discovered that the man of knowledge was a mining engineer. who he'd actually had the good for- tune to acquire some of the valuable land on the moon. Soon the peasant was offering the engineer 'a ‘large sum of money for‘ Just. a small portion c‘! the land which was to make him a millionaire. Finally the engineer agreed to this. A lawyer was found. A contract was drawn up. Money changed hands. But the drink which accompanied all this legal business stint the peasant l0 sleep in the inn where the" ' tlons took place. When he awoke the strangers and lawyer had-disappear- ed with his money, and when he in- formed the police, who at first took him, for a lunatic, he discovered sadly that his is ocence and cupidity had .coat him a large sum of hard-earned‘ defendant and imposed a fine of $200 and costs. JTIIIVIS’ LATIN’ COD! LONDON, Oct. Iii-Francs hes-now definite proof that what has boon so often described in fiction as ‘thieves’ Latin" actually exists. Some nine months ago an alleged international thief was- arrested at Parnambuco, and was found in nos- eesslcn of a notebook in whlohyari- ous Spanish words figured in one col- umn with a translation into an un- known language opposite each. For months magistrates and detectives tried in vain to persuade the alleged criminal, Alberto Pinto. to reveal the meaning of this strange diction y. and at last be has been made to speak. _ » In a statement made before a ma»!- iatrate he has declared that his dic- tionary is one of an international language of crime drawn up as the result of a congress of criminals hold in i926 at Lorida, in Spain. This language is the criminals’ Llngua. Francs. Lncxplainlng to the magis- trate how this congress came to be held and its own language establish- ed, he said that since international rogues-found. the police of the whole world working so closely together they in defence must have their own organizations and codes. According to the prisoner's account. the congress at Lerlde represented pickpockeis, railway thieves, hotel "rats." Jewel robbers and fol-gen. Among those who attended ware-ac- cording to the prisoner's statement- three Spaniards, two Portuguese, one Ererchman, two Greeks. four Eng- lishmen and four Americans. "Each member of the congress rs- celved a copy of the, international criminal code." he continued. "and you now have mine." This interest- ing document is now in the hands of the famous handwriting and code ex- Dert.
