'I`o be of' any benefit. in fact to prevent a serious disturbance to one of our greatest industries, it is necessary that a. definite line of action be agreed upon and that all shall concur in it. No dotfbt if all the fishermen in the three Maritime Prov- inces are unanimous in the opinion that a close season will be the best means of conserving the industry and of doing the least injury`to all concerned. legislative sanction for such a measure could be procured, but we presume that practical unanimity will be demanded by the governtneut before such action is taken. ln any case this is a matter _n which thc interests of the majority should he consulted md in which, also, the wi:-:lies of thc majority should pro- vail-always with a view to the conservation of the Industry. An advertisement calling this meeting appears in another issue. We trust the date will be kept in view and that the subject will be carefully considered in the meantime so that an intelligent expression of opinion may be obtained and a line of action may be adopted that will tide ovcr what is certainly u crisis in the business. MONTREAL, Nov. 23_-(Speclal)- Just at a time when the statement of Canadian corporations are being wat- ched with unusual attentlon, the Bank of Montreal comes out with a report for the fiscal year ending October 31. 1914, which is one of the strongest in its history. Owing to the unprecedent- ed situation Canada is passing through as a result of the European war, such a statement issued by the premier banking institution of the country will . be regarded as especially timely and should prove reassuring not only to Canadians generally but particularly to New York and Loudon banking in- terests who naturally look to the Bank of Montreal statement to give them an indication as to the 110510011 of the dominion of Canada. On this account, the general statement of the bank‘s assets and liabilities assumes that much greater importance than the profit and loss account. which shows the profits that were made 'Gur- ing the course of the year. The keynote of the general state- ment seems to be that every endeavor has been made to maintain an unusual- _ iy strong position and in this way be so placed as to be able to handle almost any coutiltgency that may arise in the country under the exceptional con- ditions, RECORD AMOUNT OF CASH ON HAND. With a view of keeping itself strong, attention has evidently been centered on maintaining a large percentage of both cash and liquid as- sets, as is shown by the fact that the cash on hand, represented in gold and notes of the dominion government is in excess of $42,000,000, an increase of over $19,000,000, as compared with the previous year. Of this amount gold and silver coin is held to the extent of $15,452,819. as compared with $11,- 015,339 last year and government de- mand notes $25,208,042 as conipared 051,339 last year and government do- mands note. $25,208,042 as compared with $11,149,460. An addition of $500,- 000 was also deposited in the Central Gold Reserves, bringing this amount up to $1,500,000. The cash assets to- talled 19 p. c. of the liabilities to thc public, tts compared with 10.45 p. c. at the end of the previous year. in main- taining such tt strong position the bank has evidently not availed itself of its great credit in the Loudon mar- ket, as its bills payable stands at only $436,000. LARGE PERCENTAGE OF LIQUID ASSETS. ‘ The next item of importance is the showing made by the liquid assets, these reaching the unusual total of $122,65_lL9Q3. which ise
