The folk who lived in Shakspeare’s day And saw the gentle figure pass By London Bridge,—his frequent way,— They little knew what man he was ! The pointed beard, the courteous mien, The equal port to high and low, All this they saw or might have seen— But not the light behind the brow ! The doublet’s modest gray or brown, The slender sword-hilt’s plain device, Wi:at sign had these for prince or clown? Few}turned, or none, to scan him twice. Yet ’t was the king of England’s kings! The rest with all their pomps and trains Are moldered, half-remembered things— ’T is he alone that lives and reigns ! —Thomas Bailey Aldrich, in The Century for August. ~O--> Feet. A plump little foot as white as the snow, Belonging to rollocking, frolicsome Joe, In a little red sock, with a hole in the toe, And a hole in the heel as well. A trim little foot in a trim little shoe, Belonging to sixteen-year-old Miss Sue, And looking as if it knew just what to do, And do it in a way that would tell. A very large foot in homely array, Belonging to Peter, who follows the dray, So big that it sometimes is in its own way, And moves with the speed of a snail. Ah! a very big thing is the human foot, In a dainty made shoe, or in clumsy boot, So ’tis well there are various tastes to suit. And that fashion can’t always prevail. The plump little foot, a beautiful sight, And the trim little foot, so taper and slight, And the very large foot, though much of a fright, Are travelling all the same road. And it matters but little how small or how great, So they never grow weary of paths that are straight, And at least walk in at the golden gate Of the city whose Builder is God. i >: <a No Seizures this Year. BRITISH VES#ELS IN BEHRING SEA WILL BE SAFE, Victoria, B, C., July 28. --Walter Berns, who is interested in the seal fisheries, said yesterday : No British vessels will be seized this season in Behring sea. Should an Am- erican cutter capture any sealer, it is abso- lutely certain that British war ships would never allow the prize to be taken to San Francisco, but would recapture it by force, if necessary. The first word of a seizure ' would be a signal for several men of war to sail for Behring sea from here. My authority for this opinion is principally Stavely Hill, the English member of parliment, who has forthe past two years championed the cause in the British parliament. During his late visit he assured me that no seizures would occur this year, and that if such did occur, Lord Salisbury would immediately order the British squadron to sea and retake them. ;--, - How to Remember. The American Grocer gives the following advice which every young man will do well to remember : A successful business man says there were two things which he learned when he was eighteen, which were ever afterwards of great use to him, namely,—Never to lose anything and never to forget anything. An old lawyer sent him with an important paper, with certain instructions as to what to do with it. ‘‘But,” inquired the young man, suppose [ lose it, what shall I do then ?” ‘*You must not lose it.” ‘I don’t mean to,” said the young man, ‘‘but suppose I should happen to ?” “But L say you must not happen to. I shall make no provision for such an occurrencé: you must not lose it.” This put a new train of thought into the yonng man’s mind, and he found that if he was determined to do the thing he could do it, He made such a provision against every a con- tingency that he never lost anything. He found this equally true about forgetting. If a certain matter of importance was to be re- membered, he pinned it down on his mind, fastened it there, and made it stay. He used to say: ‘‘Whena man tells me that he forgot to do something, I tell him he might have said: ‘I do not care enough about your busi- ness to take the trouble to think about it again.’” I once had an intelligent young man in my employment who deemed it sufficient excuse for neglecting any important task to say; “] forgot.” I told him that would not answer, If he was sufficiently interested he would be careful to remember. It was because he did care enough that he forgot it. I drilled him with this truth. He worked for me three years, and during the last of the three he was utterly changed in this respect. He did not forget anything. His forgetting, he found, was a lazy, careless habit of the mind, which he cured. 2+ >. eo -—-—— Modesty. ‘“‘What hundred books are best, think you ?” I said, Addressing one devoted to the pen. ; He base a@ moment, then he raised his “T harly know—l've written only ten.” —Johu Kendrick Bangs, in The Century for August. pictiher a. VOL. 26.—NO. 54. Boston Markets. Boston, July 24. The egg market made a further advance early in the week and has ruled steady and firm since, but the indications are that prices are now full as high as can be sus- tained. Eastern extras are still scarce and command full prices. Choice marks of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and P. E. Island are in fair demand at 19c. Choice fresh western are selling well at about 17c., with inferior marks ranging anywhere from 13 to 16 cents. _ The supply of potatoes has been increas- ing since last report, and now includes a ‘good many natives that are not figured in the receipts. Prices began to fall off on (Friday. Considerable stock was carried over Sunday, and Monday the market \settled to $3 for best Rose and Hebrons, and has ruled steady at that price since with a good demand for choice stock. There is no marked change in the condi- tion of the fish market. Codfish continue in limited supply, and are having a limited sale with prices still ruling high. Depew has _ received an auto- graph letter from the Prince of Wales, acknow- edging the receipt of his ‘‘ Orations and after- dinner Speeches,” recently published by the Cassell Publishing Company, New York. The Prince expresses his thanks warmly, and indi- cates his belief that a perusal of the book will assist him greatly in his work of preparing the numerous addresses he is called upon to de- liver on ceremonial occasions. An invitation was sent to Prince Bismarck by the American students at Gottingham to attend the Fourth of July fetes at that place. In his reply, which was written in English, the ex-Chancellor said: ‘Of the four distin- guished Americans who are to be honored with memorial tablets, I have had the privilege of counting two among my intimate friends— Motley and Bancroft. Therefore I am doubly sorry that it will be impossible for me to take part in your interesting ceremony.” Sir Charles Tupper and his granddaughter, Miss Cameron, were present at the garden party given by the Prince of Wales at Marl. orough House, on Monday, “to meet Her Majesty the Queen.” Lady Tupper was un- fortunately prevented by indisposition from attending. Sir John and Lady Thompson and Miss Carling were also among the guests, and were presented by Sir Charles Tupper to the Prince of Wales.—Canadian Gazette, a - <> - ~<a A Bear Srory.—A correspondent at Chepstow writes : **‘ On last Sunday even- ing, some young men saw a bear in this locality. After getting well equipped with fire-arms, they went in his pursuit, but failed to capture him. Another young man by the name of William Pope, on learning that bruin was prowling around, was de- termined to secure him. He stayed alone, and shortly bruin put in an appearance. Immediately on his noticing his enemy, he tried to make his escape, but Mr. Teen, being a dead shot, laidhim low.
