[Sin] RECKLESS Drivine at Socris.—A Souris correspondent writing under date May 13th, says: ‘*About dusk on Sanday evening two carriages, with their smiling occupants, came dashing on Souris bridge at full speed for the purpose of raising excitement or trying the speed of their gallant steeds; and one of the carriages went smash against the draw post of the bridge, removing its occupants and throw- ing them out. Some of the parties came near having a cold bath. It is a pity, besides the loss, that they were not all sent swimming. It would cool them, I think, but it would not repair the disabled vehicle. The horse ran away, leaving the occupants to grapple for themselves as best they could. As Mrs. McFaul, of Staffa, was driving home from Exeter, her horse took fright and ran away, throwing her out of the buggy and killing her instantly. Her three year old daughter, who was with her at the time, was also thrown out and so seriously injured that but slight hopes are entertained. UNITED STATES. Prrrston, May 12. Mountain fires around here are raging. A large amount of lumber and R. R. ties have been destroyed. The Laflin Powder Mills are threatened and many men are fighting the flames. Says the World:—The steamship Andes, fresh from seaport cities of the West Indies, in two of which yellow fever is epidemic, is on the way to New York. Among the new Cardinals are the Rev. Jno. Henry Newman, of England, and Rev. Dr. Herzenrotther. The Pope also made several appointments to Bishoprics, and amongst those are Car- dinal Hohenlobe to the Bishopric of Albano, Rev. Dr. McCabe to that of Dublin, and Rev. Dr. Weodlech to that of Ardagh and Cloughmaynoise. RUSSIA. Sr. Pererspure, May 12. Intelligence has been received from Liflis that a disease, of terrible mortality, is rag- ing in ten villages in the Caucasus. A solemn procession of holy pictures has been held in the district of Goriand. Prayers were offerec for the preservation of the in- habitants. Beriin, May 12.
