The figure has varied only very little in the past three weeks. In terms of money it is roughly estimated that between 520,000 and s25,000 is being paid out every seven days. The claim- ants handled by the Charlottetown office include all residents of King's and Queen's Counties. The National Employment Of- fice in Summerslde pays all benefit claims in Prince County, and at the present time is understood to have 3. total of approximately one thousand people entitled to weekly cheques. The combined figures for both offlcas, Charlottetown and Summerslde, is well over 2500. and the amount of money disbursed weekly well over 330,000. 0 t C There has been quite a change in the condition of Charlottetown streets since last spring. Either be- cause of old age or the wear and tear of trucks, bulldozers and ma- chines equipped with caterpillar treads, the City's highways liter- ally crumbled to rubble in many places during the winter of 1952. Citizens who motored bumpily over the damaged thoroughfares felt, as well as saw the extensive damage. Many predicted that it would be years before the streets were repaired. Fortunately the City Council, who assisted them during their recent sad bereavement, also those who sent Mass Cards, Spiritual Bouquets, Enrollments and Mes- sages of Sympathy. On the whole the reconditioned streets have come through the winter very well, but a. few have shown signs of quick deterioration. Those in which defects have de- veloped will be repaiied this spring. The contr'act.ors-accord- ing to City manager James F. Ful- lerton, will be back when the weather permits, to complete un- finished work and to deal with previous work which has proved unsatisfactory. It is understood the City Council withheld some thousands of dollars of the tract price, until the durability of the new streets could be tested. . . . Our fellow citizen ”Buck" Whit- lock is being honored tonight for his great contribution to hockey. His career on the ice has been noteworthy and brought his native province much desirable publicity. Neither can it be overlooked that Roy Whitloclt served Canada with great credit during the war in our country's navy. and almost lost his life when his ship was torpedoed. Since his discharge he has been a good citizen, steadily employed by a company which values his serv- ices highly. In the summer time, after work-' lng hours he has been one of our better baseball players, and for pure love of the gzmc has fre- quently hustied out to the diamond after a long day's viork. On the diamond as on the ice he has en- tertained thousands of people. and been responsible for iiiany a thrill, winter and summer. In war and in peace, at work or at play he has been is good citizen, which is probably the greatest tribute which can be paid him. Home of ancient civilization India had large, wcll-planned com- munltles 5,000 years ago. ”.”Ill-1 Ilnrw 'f if VIII”, Hull 3'" ”Wirc tnzulc of siimc nit-iiils like imii wniild hurn away in .1 act-untl.
