Construction surtable for electric heating WHAT'S IN AHOUSE | a Floor Fi nishes Aid Appearance FLOORING (1) The first finishing job which makes the house livable is the flooring. The flooring and prop- erly finished floors add a zreat deal to the appearance of the house. Prospective homeowners usually give considerable thought to the flooring to be in- stalled in their new homes Both hardwood and tile floors follect less dirt and are easier to clean and polish if they are well laid and finished. There are many types of floor- ing. There is a type of flooring to suit about every taste and purpese. Some people insist on hardwood flooring. at least in the living and dining rooms, while others prefer resilient flooring in all rooms. Ceramic tile is popular for bathroom floors The main species of wood used for fleoring are maple, birch and oak, all hardwood. © Wood manufacturers grade their lumber according to quality and appearance. Top grade flooring is fairly uniform in col- our and is virtually free from defects. Medium grades may be just as serviceable but will con- tain some knots and blemishes and there will be a larger pro- portion of short pieces in every load. Mill-run flocring is a mix- ture of all unsorted grades ex- actly as it comes from the mill. Flooring grades for NHA- fin- anced houses are specified in the book Residential Standards which is available at. any CMHC office. Because flooring is purposely dried out. care must be taken to keep it free of moisture. It should be nailed in place as soon as possible after delivery to the site. If the lumber con- tains too much moisture. wide spaces will appear between the beards following shrinkage. Flooring should never be stor- ed in a house that has just been plastered, and if necessary. the heating system should be kept in operation between the time the lumber is delivered and the, floor-laying job is completed. FLOORING (2) How. you may ask, is hard- wood nailed in place? Special flooring nails are normally used to nail the flooring boards to the sub-floor. Nails are driven In at an angle through the ton- gue which runs along the edge 0 each board This is called concealed nailing because the nail heads don’t show when the next board is put in place Ceramic tiles are used mainly for bathroom floors and hall- ways. The important thing is to lay the tiles so that the finished floor surface is level with the floors in the adjoining rooms or hallway Variations between floor levels are both annoying and dangerous Resilient flooring is a cover- ing of composition tile or linol- eur and is now standard for surfacing kitchen and bathroom floors. It is also frequently used in other parts of the house. This type of flooring ts very easy to install Unless the subfloor = made of clywood. and underlay +l be required under resilient floor- ing. Thit underlay may be ply- wood or some other material which has proved satisfactory for the purpose To avoid bumps in the floor. the joints between the underlay panels should be perfectly smooth. The ness will eventually show up on the floor surface Nail heads should be hamtmered down flush with the underlay or counter- sunk slightly. A soundproof floor must be vded between the upper and slightest uneve- } The upper floor should be insu- lated with a layer of soft textur- ed fibre-board over. the sub- flooring to act as a sound buffer between the two units THE BASEMENT A smooth. hard basement floor adds Value tha hose Aw even floor is easier to keep clean and is important if plans include a basement recreation room. The floor in the laundry area should slope towards the drain Whilé the basement stairs can be built before the floor is pour- ed. it may be preferable to wait until the floor is finished ~~ included are. full details on HOW TO OBTAIN DESIGN BOOK The latest design book en- titled “Canadian Guide te ___Home...Planning ‘and Design” is now available at the offic- es of The Guardian and The Evening Patriot for $1, tax | free. WHFFMAN TERMITES ATTACK QUESTION: The house we are considering purchasing has pecky cypress paneling in the li- ving room and the. same kind of wood beams on the ceiling. The woodwork in the halls is also of pecky cypress. Is this wood easily attacked by termites or subject to rotting” ANSWER: The “‘pecks” which Zive the wood its name are for- med by infection of a fungus growth in the living tree. This infection stops when the tree is cut down and milled into boards. Contrary to general public opinion, pecky cypress is More resistant to termite infect- jon and rotting than many other kinds of lumber OLD LAUNDRY TUBS QUESTION: We recently pur- chased an older home.
