There is an hour when lovers’ ears To lightest whispers hark— The hour whose mystery éndears-- Between the day and dark. The day is all too garish white, The night too dull and blind, The day's wide eye is large and bright, The night’s cold eye unkind. The day is made for listening, The night is cold and cark, But ‘tis the hour when love is king— Between the day and dar’; The day is spie@ by honey bees And pricked with feathered wings, The night awakes on every breeze The chirp of woodsy things, But when the night as yet is still And day is lying stark, Then love goes wandering at will— Between the day and dark. ~Post Wheeler in New York Press, ~ PLAIN RULES FOR SPELLING. fhe Use of the Letters “ei” and “ie” Is Different Words. . The spelling of words in ie and ei causes @ great deal of trouble in the world, and I have thought it would be useful if a form- ula could be got up which should cover al] such words in an easily *emembered jin- gie. Such a rule would perform the same sort of service as the ever useful ‘‘ Thirty days hath September.’’ The object of the jingls fs to state every case in which the ‘‘e’’ comes before the ‘i’? Inall other cases the ‘‘1’’ comes first. It thus becomes a very easy Inatter when in doubt' to run through the verses and de- cide at once what the spelling in any case is. The rule bend at first seem mixed and not plain. ButJt is easily understood, and & person who comzpits it to memory never need have any further frouble on the score of eiorie. Itissimply to be noted that there are five cases itm which ‘‘e’’ comes before ‘‘i:’’ First.— When the sound is long ‘‘a.’’ Second.—When the soun@ is long ‘‘i.”’ Third—After the letter ‘‘e)”’ Fourth.—When, with fomr exceptions, the sound is short. Fifth.—In a list of I? words-not includ- ed in the above four cases. In all other cases ‘‘i’’ comes before ‘‘e.’’ When sound is like long aor i, Or after letter c; Save mischief, kerchief,. friend and sieve, When like short i or e. Im either, neither, seignos,.seize;. Obeisance and in sheik, Your cough, like a dog’s bark, is a sign that there is something foreign around which shouldn’t be there. You can quiet the noise, but the danger may be there just the same. Scott’s Emulsion of Cod-liver Oil is not a cough specific; it does not merely allay the symptoms but it does give such strength to the body that it is able to throw off the disease.
