I0. 1393- EDII' ORIAL NOTES- It is said that Piper Findlater, hero of Dargai, purposes to visit Can- ada next spring. If he does so we trust he will come to I' E Island where there are enough of the sons of the heather to give him and his pipes a royal welcome. Before the Scotch Medico-Psych ological society a. proposition was en- tertained to provide Hugging as a penalty for habitual drunkenness. The proposed penalty might, in rare cases effect an amendment, but in the majority of instances its elfect for good would be more than doubtful. It would require a great change in public sentiment in Canada before a' law could be enacted to award flogg- ing in cases of drunkenness. On Sunday last the Steamer Hia- watha returned to Halifax from the search for the bodies of some wealthy NcwYorkpeop1e who /were drowned in the Bnrgigne disaster. The prime object of the search was not obtained, viz t-he finding of the bodies of Mrs. Dillon, Mrs. Perry and members of the families. But thirty of the bodies of other drowned passengers were discovered afloat. A few were idents- l iiied and all were given ocean burial. Nearly all the floating bodies were supported by life preservers when found. They had been drifting with wind and tide about the sea. for _ weeks-a. truly gruesome spectacle. l The esteemed Examiner' takes up: the question How to Endure Hot Weather. \Vhn.t is known elsewhere] as hot weather is not known on P. E. l Island. So far as this province is ' concerned the hot weather chapter ,l might be made as brief as that mem-i arable one on snakes in Ireland. The entire chapter was included in the words “There are no snakes in Ire-. land.” Nor can we avrec that even Japanese children used to sit upon heir heels in the schoolroom. grouped chanting together their lroha cr reading n concert the wise mixims from their readers which have been the mental food of couiitlesss generations ot their they sit on beifches before desks in Western fashion. though they do D0! glad, on returning home. (ee-ro-hah), which corresponds to our alphabet. _ Under the former system cf schooling. all Japanese children learned to read and write the Biranganzl characters and to calculate, and it was ai unheard-ot thing for a grown person to be unable at least to read and write and do simple calculation. They were seldom sent to school before the age of 7, and were not hard pressed in thenr studies. In learn- ing to write they were acquiring the dexterity ot tinger and wrist needtul in dra.win,q,and without doubt their meihozl of writing is one of the traits which have tended to make the Japanese a nation of artistic tendencies. A soft paper is used and a brush instead of a pen. Care and exnclnees are necessary. owing to the nature oi the materials. and it is im. possible to use the hand in a cramped or stiff position: hence freedom and grace of movement result. The child folds the paper in one hand and the brush in the other; the whole arm works, mo- tion couiing from the shoulder. elbow. and wrist, as well as from the finger muscles. The papcl',as soon as touched, absorbs the Indian ink with which necessary to touch with precision and care, and acquires insensibly n. certain power of drawing in that precise touch and in the exercise of the arm and hand muscles. . _ Western principles in education, as well as Western school furniture, have been adopted in the sunrise kingdom The Arabic numbers. 1. 2, 3. etc.. are used, for the Japanese at once. re- cognized the advantage of' these signs for numbers instead ot their own cumbersome ones.
