couple drove to the home of the bride
where a wedding supper was held, as
both young people are very popular.

BACK FROM BELGIUM.-Mr. P. L.
Lawson, of Halifax, who accompanied
the Belgian relief steamer Tremorvali
from Halifax to Rotterdam, has re-
turned on the Cartliaglnian this morn-
ing. Mr. Lawson says that the food
and clothing supplies going to thc dis-
tressed nation, a large amount of
which went from P. E. island, are be-
commission, which has Rotterdam as a-
distriliutioii center. 'l‘lie first -Nova
Scotia cargo was warmly welcomed
and quickly disposed of. The relief
commission estimate that eighty thou-
sand tons of foodstuff will be required
each month to prevent starvation. The
greater part of Belgium has been over-
run. There are scarcely any cattle
left, and milk is unattainable, ami as a
result, infant mortality is on the in-
crease. lu the refugee camps in liol-
land are vust crowds of women, chil-
dren and aged men. The liolliiiiders
arc doing nobly, but'their_owii resour-
ces ure very liinlted. “lf the North
Sea is completely closed," said Mr.
Lawson; "the calamity will he dread-
,i’ul, for only through Rotterdam are
there facilities for sending in relief."

FAREWELL GA1"HERlNG.- On
Thursday evening, Dec. 10th, a num-
ber of the residents of Hunter River
and vicinity assembled at the home of
Mr. and Mrs. John Andrews to bid
them farewell on the eve of their de-
parture for New Glasgow where they
intend residing in the future. After
a programme consisting of speeches,
recitatlons and phonograph selections,
Mr.-Adam Brown, in behalf of those
present. presented Mr. and Mrs. An-
drews with ii. flattering address and -a
handsome oak rocker. Although taken
by surprise the recipients in a few
well chosen remarks, thanked their
friends for their generous gift .and the
idiid words of appreciation. Refresh-
ments provided by the ladies were
tlien served and the company joined
in singing "God be with you till \vc
ingot again." After which they dis-
persed to their homes, wishing Mr.
ami Mrs.’Aiidrews long life and pros-
perity iu` their new lionic.
ANXIOUS ABOUT SABLE ISLAND.
-There has been no communication
with Sable Island since tlie war began.
Shortly after the' declaratioii of war
the steamer Earl Grey went to the Is-
land and dismantled the Marconi wire-
less apparatusaiid brought oil’ the op-
erators. A number of Eastern Pils-
suge people wiio were iii lialifiix Sat-
urday were innking anxious inquiries
as to when the Marine and Flslierles
Department intends to semi a steamer
to the island. There are several fniii-
ilies there, and nearly all hail i'roni the
Passage. As there has been no tidings
from the Island for several nioiitlis,
and as it now looks as though there
would be no Cliristnias trip, the rela-
tives nnd friends of the people there
are getting anxious. lt is known that
when the steamer was there lust in
September the superinteiideiint was
not iii good health. The Eastern Pas-
sage people would like to know if
their island frleiids are dead or alive.
SOUTHERN TEACHERS’ ASSOCI-
ATi0N.- 'l‘he first general meeting
of the Southern Teachers' Institute
was held in the Prince of Wales Col-
lege on Dec, 19th. The President, Mr.
Harvey Christopher occupied the
chair. About thirty-of`tlic teachers
of the Seventh Inspectorate were pre-
sent aiid a very interesting and profit-
able session was held. The teachers
of this iiistectoratc feeling that much
good might be derived from meeting
together, and discussing questions
relative to their profession have de-i
cided to meet in Charlottetown on the
second ami fourth Saturday‘s of each
month. The business of this organiza-
tion Iias been put into thc hands of a
strong Executive and it is expected
that future sessions will be made so
interesting that no teacher can afford
to be absent. At last Saturdays sess-
ion the President made an earliest
appeal for co-operation on the part
ot' the teachers in their chosen profes-
sion. The purpose for which the Insti-
tute wus organized, plans for the win-
ter's work, and the beiiciits to lic de-
rived from united efforts were laid lie-
forc the meeting and fully discussed.
inspector Crockett spoke of the work
being done alongtlie line oi' “School-
Gardens and Home-Projects” congra-
tulating the teachers on what they had
already accomplished, and outlined
plans for more successful work in the
future. A very practical “Paper” on
"Discipline" was read by Mr. Christo-
pher McGuigan of Johnstone River.
Quite a lively discussion, taken part
in by Mr. Nnddon McLeod, Pownal,
Mr. Patrick Welsh. Vernon River; and
Mr. Edward MacPliail, Bunbury, fol-
lowed. Mr. Albert MacPhail, Alexand-
ria, read a very interesting and ap-
propriate papcr, on “How to Celebrate
Christnias in the Primary School."
