J. Maxwell, who was on the © bedclothes tied together, to the roof of the inner court, though clad only in his under- | shirts The roof was partially glass, through | z] alse covered with snow, Another man was | there utterly bewildered, with no clothing | which he was in danver of falling I[t was except his drawers, which had fallen down | to his feet. Maxwell vainly tried to arouse | him, after which he broke into the window | of a room and entered the hallway, which | was full of smoke and stifling hot, and es- caped. A. detective says :—‘‘The gils| came down ‘thud, ‘thud,’ and we tried to} catch each one, only to have the corners of | the canvas pulled from our hands. At one time the back alley was ONE MASS OF GORE, and seven girls were piled there dead, while a tiumber more were on the ground writh- | ing in) agony. Our men could hear the eries of the dying as far.as the corner of Fourth and Chestnut streets One man crawled from window to window down three storeys, and then gave out, fell, and was killed, his hands being torn. in shreds from falling and catching.” This morning sticains of water are still playing on the Tulns, of the building is all, that remains standing. Miss Chellis, who perished wm one of the upper storeys, was within reach ofthe fire escspe, but was helpless from terror. Jud- son Haugh jumped from the fifth storey inte the canvas. Both his legs were broken and he received fatal internalinjuries. He was visiting Allen Johnson, and was agent for the North-Western National Insurance Company. He leaves a wife and four children. With a great effort he saic to the bystanders. “Peoria. Wife, baby, anc Dix.” Henry Cohn, of New York, brcke open a window, déscended by the fire-eecape to fhe second floor, crawled along the cornice to the building on the north; entered through a window, and es- eaped. An cfficer ascended the fire-escape to the fourth storey and entered the window, aroused # number of sleeping inmates, and conveyed four women and three men down. He’ did not quit until his own life was in danger. A HERO'S WORK. At the height of the panie a man appear- ed on top of the building opposite the ser- vants’ quarters with a ladder in his hand. For a moment the long, unwielding thing poised in. the air, and then descended with a crash through the window of the hotel ; then, amid the cheers of the multitude below, the man dragged the. helpless crea- tures across the slender bridge, till fully a dozen were rescued. They were all of them in their night clothes, and many were badly frozen tefure they could be taken to shelter. A women in a dead faint, unable to help herself in any way, was dragged over in safety; but at one time the whole of her body was hanging over the edge of the ladder, while the brave man held her by one ot her ankles, The crowd below held their breath in sus- nse, expecting every moment to see the turn over or break beneath “the terrible strain. The man was equal to the emergentt, however, and by a herculean effurt drew her upon the slender bridge and crossed in safety, while the crowd, which ‘had ed'the most painfol suspense for fully ten minutes, burst forth with round after round of applause, A DANGEROUS STRUCTURE. One hundred and twenty-five workmen were engaged al] day on the 11th, at the ruins of the Newha!] House, searching for bodies, but none were found up to seven o'clock in the evening. The police and firemen are confident that fifty people are buried in the ruina, including a number not yet published. Crowds are arriving by every train, and the hotels are filled with tearful, anxious people seeking friends or relatives, supposed to have been in the fire. All the injared are doing pretty well. The feeling here is intense. The men whose greed and revklessvess part oecasioned the calamity. receive unlimited censure. The revenue from rents amounted to $10,000 a year, but the management would not em- ploy a night watchman. One man ‘acted the patt of night porter and watchman, but had to.attend two trains, and could not preperly watch the building There were only two fire escapes. Three years ago re- peated attempts at incendiarism were made in the hotel. Six times in successidn a person who was never prosecuted set the place on fire. The hotel had no dividing walls of brick. It was a magnificent match box, werthy of an eastern watering place or frontier towm Wiliam McKenzie, night watchman of the hotel, states chat he made his rvunds on .the night of the five as usual, The bar-room was open until 2 a. m., and Gen. Scheller, proprietor, | B was there. Three-quarters of an hour after, about half-past three, the watchman took a man to the top floor by the elevator The watchman looked around the halls and | got into the elevatur to go down, when he noticed a little smoke. He immediately started down to see where it came from, and by the time he reached the office floor he could go no farther. Throwing open the door he started for the stairs and raised an alarm. There were 110 guests and 67 employees in the building. Twenty so far have been identified among the dead, and 48 are missing, and 67 are known to be saved, leaving 42 unaccounted for, who are supposed to be in the ruins. It is believed that John Gilbert, the actor, whose bride perished during the fire festerday cannot recover from his injuries. is real. name is John Demming. Charles Kelsey, (colored), who was burned to death was Tom Thumb's valet. The report that Hendrix, a prominent bosiness man of New Haven, and Prof. Tomlins, musician, of Ohieago, had perished, is untrue. ‘Juicaco, Jan. 11,—A despatch received here this afternoon says so far 92 lives are known to be lost at the Milwaukee firs, It-is feared the number will prove grester.
