TH een i a Whaiers Frozen In. THIRTEEN WHALERS AND SIX HUNDRED MEN IMPRISONED IN THE ARCTIC OCEAN, The whaling bark J. A. Howland, which arrived at San Francisco a few days ago, brings vews that 13 whalers are shut in the ice ubvut 20 miles from Herald Island, al- most the identical place where the Jean- ete was first caught. On board the ves sels were between 5600 and 600 men. With their catch the vessels represent $525,000 There is little hope of escape. The catch was very poor until the latter part ol August, when the whalers, becoming des- perate, took great risks in running up little coves in the ice after whales. They caught several, but suddenly the ice came and before they could escape 13 were firmly hemmed in. On Sept. 26th a relief party was sent out from Fox Island with wood and clothes in two whaling steamers, but ti the relief could not reach whalers. At last ac vessels were drifting westward toward the Siberian Cvast, following the course of the un fortanate bark Napoleon three years ag, from which only one man escaped after (wo years of almost ineredible hardships in the a storm get mn the imprisoned counts the —_——— + E DAILY EXAM Halifax and West India Steamship Line. -_———— ne THE STEAMER toa 23° ALPHA” Will Leave Halifax ABOUT OCTOBER -~FOR- Bermuda, Turk’s Island and Kingston, Making regular monthly trips. 15th, —_-—— THE STEAMER “BETA” WILL LEAVE- Halifax for Havana and Matanzas, Cuba, i ais NOVEMBER NEXT Through Bills of Lading will be granted from ‘harlottetown or any Station on the P. The Lancet reports that in order to test the effect of constant inhalation of dust in flour mills on the animal organism, M. L. Poincarre kept guinea pigs for two years in the most dusty part of a flour miil—that is to say, the department, where the corn is cleansed from all extraneous matter by a special michiue befure being ground. Of twenty animals, ten remained alive at the end of two years. Those that died were moatly young ones. None of these showed traces of tuberculosis, but catarrhal pneumonia with profuse dysquamation of epithelieum; also im some cases localized in terstitial pneumonia and extravasation of blood. Dust, cunsisting of grains of starch, etc.. was found, more particularly on the nasal mucous membrane, but oniy to a small extent in the bronchi. Eezema. Itchy, Scaly, Skin Tor- tures.
