St. Gabriel St Church was the first
editice for public worship in connection
with the Presbyterian Church iii the
Province of Quebec. It was the first
Protestant plate of public worsliip in
all Canada,-Canada. meaning .Ontaro
and Quebec and all the West.
ON the 12th March, 1786. the first
Presbyterian Church organizition was
formed at Montreal.
REV. George Henry, cx-Chaplain toa
Scottish regiment, organized the first
Presbyterian church in the city of Quot-
bec, 1765- Scottish soldiers did much for
the Church in both Montreal and Quebec.
Du. Robert Campbell, in his History
of St. Gabriel church, Montreal, says:
lt is not easy to realize it, but it isa
fact that a few of those who wuts pre-
sent at the organization of first Presby-
terian congregation in a room on Notre
Dame street, on the 12 March, 1786, had
as youths. been actually engaged in the
fight at bulloden in 17-16; and several
of them were children or descendants of
those brave men who stood by the side
of Prince Charlie on that fated field."
The Murray and Fraser Highlanders
were prominent in the original congre-
ation. ~
g The Rey. John Bethune was the first
Presbyterian minister in Montreal. Hc
was born in the isle of Skye,1757_ Hc
was a loyalist, in South Carolina in the
Revolutionary war, and was for some
time 2. prisoner in_ the hands of the
revolutionists. \Vhe'n an exchange of
prisoners took place he made his way to
Nova Scotia and was for some time in
Halifax. He became chaplain of the

Highland emigrants. This regiment
on Wednesday 16th inst helped to save Quebec when Montgomery

Bethune settled at Montreal. There
his lellow-countrymen rallied round him
and assisted in the building of St. Gabriel
Street Church. Mr. ,Bethune continued
in Montreal a little more than a car

Bethune was the iirst Principal ot Mo-
Gill College. '
In 1786 Montreal sent a monthly mail
to England, by way of New York. It
took four months to receive an answer
from England. It took a month to send
the mails from Halifax to Montreal.
' For three years precodi -g 1790 there
were no Presbyterian services in Mon-
treal. Rev John Young, was the man
who placed .he Presbyterian Church
here on a firm and permanent basis.
Young was born at Beith, Scotland,
licensed by the Presbylery Q Irvine in
1785, ordained at Schenectady. Aug. 14,
1788. In 1791 he became “Stated sup-
ply" at Montreal, the congregation be-
ing at its own request taken under the
care of the Pr esbylery of Albany. In
y 1793 both minister and congregation
were permitted to join thc newly organ-
ized *-Presbytery of Montreal." It is
said that this first Presbytery of Mon-
.treal consisted of Dr. Sparks ol Quebec,
_ Mr Bethune of tllengarry, and Mr.
*Young of Montreal with three elders.
Dr. Campbell has been unable to find
any records of tbii presbytery. Mr.
Young supplied the congregation for
about eleven years. His ministry there
closed in 1802. Unfortunately he was
not a total abstaiucr: hc mas not in fact
sufficiently careful in his use ot wine. In
that day total abstinence was not expect-
ed. but sobriety was, of course. insisted
upon. From Montreal he went west
for a time to Niagara. He was finally
settled at Sheet Harbor, Halifax County
where he died in 1822.-It was through
his exertions that old St. Gabriel’s was
built.
A number ot noted Scottish Highlan-
ders werc for a long time connected
with St. Gabriel btresz Church. One if
these was Hon. James McGill, the foun-
der and first benefactor of the Univer-
sity that bears his name. Another was
Sir Alexander McKenzie, the hardy
and adventurous discovercr of thc Mac-
Kenzie river, so named after him, -He
followed the mighty river till he found
it empty into the Arctic sea--at river lon-
ger than the St Lawrence with allits
Lakes counted in. It was MacKenzie
who fi: at explored the Peace River val-
ey, arid crossed the entire continent in-
this northern latitude. This was in 17
93.
Simon Fraser. the discoverer of the
river which bears his name in British Co-
lnmbia,coi:itributed tbicc guineas to the
building of St Gabriel’s Church. He was
a Roman Catholic, but courtesies of this
sort were then not rare. Fraser traver-
sed thc continent early in the present
century and sailed down to the mouth of
this tremendous river.
The next minister of St Gabrlcl’s was
Rev. Janie Somerville, who was pastor
from 1803 till he died in 1837. His health
was poor for many years, and Mr. Es-
son was associated with him in the pris-
torate_
