A Baddhbist Baby Born Ten Days Ago and Just Entering the Sixth Race of the Fourth Round--Does Not Care for Ite Latest Parents Ihave been born just ten days and I must say it is not at all the sort of thing that | was ed to expect. Of course I have gone throngh it before; in fact, as Iam just entering the sixth race of the fourth i lam atolerably old hand at being by this time. ButI find myself quite unable to remember any of my previous babyhoods, and if they were at all like this one I don't regret it in the least. Exist- Devachan is exceedingly enjoyable iu its way, but after the first few centuries or so it does get just the least bit dull. Consequently when the ripple of Karmic force approaches the edge of its subcyelic basin (1 don't know whether you under stand this, but I can assure yon it is the correct way of expressing the situation’, the being who is about to move from tue ence in Devachanic area of effects into the next area of causes by afresh incarnation faces the prospect with a mild satisfaction. But when the job acinally comes off it is dis- tinctly disappointing A Jugginse—a monad, I should say—who passes into jectivity and itimate irrita blandishmeuts rather w ul sreritai ¢ oblivion a8 A Spiritual su ip asa bal els a ley acuvravate than aliay ild be difficult to overstate the in- dignities and discomforts of early incarna- tion. In Devachan one has no body te speak of being ail *‘principles;” and though these are sometimes a little mixed, one soon learns to accommodate one’s self to imstances, But this arrangement breaks down hopelessly under the present system of being born. The simple ract is that at present 1 don’t fit this confounded baby, an 1, ples being roomy, I erably cramped. I enppose that in my princi am te due time my faculties will dwindle to the im‘te of their present abode, and with the diauppearance of se)f-consciousness I shall at least be spared the annoyance which the knowledge of my infirmities are now caus ing me. But meanwhileI am having an exceedingly bad time of it. Of course when I last went to Devachan I left my tuurth priueiple (kama rc g the animal voul, you know) behind m nd though it “ eee enough sort of sual in its Way, id, to tell the truth, its little faults, and 1 soon " grew qu site reconciled to its ausence, I was, therefore, rather annoyed to find that it had rejoined me in my new quar- ters, particularly as I underssand that its imued.ate business will be to work off old res incurred during my last inuearcerae n. I very soon got a taste of its quality . In my previous earth life I was what ou may call a bon vivant; indeed, my impression is that I died at table.’ Now, there is a solid dignity about the pleasures of the table which I should be the last to depreciate; but they are notoriously at- tended by certain little discomforts, which uuader ordinary circumstances are happily quite trans.ent. In my case, bowever, the natural c ourse of things was i..terrupted, and accordingly the earliest feature of my present babyhood was the one familiar sensation ofa terrible “head” which my kama rupa had thoughtfully kept going for me during my Devachanic career. This was bad enongh in all conscience, but my misery was agyravated by my hely lesaneee, found myself totally un- able to do justice to the situation, I tried to swear (l was a ¢ istinguished military man in one of my earlier earth lives and the propensity has clung to me throvgh several eanccessive an” but it was a ead failure, and I could achieve nothing more incisive than babe le and rqueakx, This unlucky incident at onee vrought my nurse to my side, ad the idiot forth. with tried to counteract the effects of an- tenatal joviality by dosing me with diil. And this reminds me of another serious discomfort to which I have to submit. The cuisine of “ nursery (including the cel'ar) is detestable, but 1 can exercise ne cffee tive control over it whatever. I weep and squeal vige vusly whenever I d-tect any prospect of : being fed, and Iam not with- out hope that this causes my tormeitors rome anxiety, but its protective value is sbrolutely nil. About this same squeal- ing, too, a precious lot of rubbish Las been talked. One philosophical member, saw in the squalls of infancy a revelation of the baby’s exalted nature, de- slaring that the Brat 1s ‘‘permeated with certitude” that he is entitled to exact from the external world the satisf ction of isneeds. Anothersage of the same caliber consi de red the squall to denote the horror felt by the soul at b-ing en- laved by nature, I know what my squalls uean, Tem iper, sir; good, honest adult mper, which, however, suffers exceeding- xor frou the degraded mode of ex- towhich it is condemned. Of urse, I shall soon foryet all this nonrense, ogether with other relies of my past; but I felt as certain that I shall not nave to learn it allagain. I am satisfied hat my presen? parents will insist on giv- first-rate education; they sem vols enough for anything. I should like © eXpiain to my new mamma how cordi- ally Lhate her and al) her works. Her sttent'ous to me are oxerpowering, but I might pot up with that if they were not so intolerabiy foclish. I can recollect my- self as aman well over thirteen stone, with a florid complexion and a bulbons sose, Yet I have to submit to the Iludi- erous indignity of being addressed as “My precious!” Sometimes she wooes me with a sort of clucking sounds as if I wes 8 hen pheasant; and at others, when my attrac ltogether overcome ner, I find myself smothered in a flood of juicy carresses, which are actually intoler- able toa misogynist. Worst of all, per- baps, are the degradi og misapprehensivns, f which Iam constantly the victim. In my last earth life 1 had a fine barytone, and a day or two ago I tried to beguile the weary inaction of the cradle by practicing my low notes The atter mpt, must admit, was not a complete success, but any one with a grain of apprec iation would have grasped the idea. As it was, my fool of a mamma set it for a fool of a doctor, who immediately treated me for croup. Hark! t footstep. It is she whom Iam reluctant- ly unable to disobey—at present, And I am going to be exhibited to a circle of gushing friends. Happy thought! I will pretend to have couvalsions. Late news from Hong Kong shows that the plague is increasing rather than diminishing in severity. The total for the 26th, 27th and 28th ult. were 66 new cases and 76 deaths, and there were hopes that the disease was showing signs of diminishing. On the 29th, however, 30 new cases were reported and 25 deaths; on the 30th, 33 new cases and 28 deaths; on the 3lst, 41 new cases and 48 deaths, and on the Ist of June, 59 new cases and 54 deaths. The serious news is alo pub- lished that an officer and three soldiers engaged in inspecting the slums have been attac ked by the plague, bat whether these belonged to the English or Indian regi- ments at Hong Kong is not stated. The imperial Chinese telegraph has communi cated the following to the Shanghai papers dated Hong Kong, 29th May, 8.40 p.m. Shauhing and Samshus districts are flocd- ed two to three feet deep, and business is stopped. The rice fields at Tung Kun and Fatshan are submerged, and the river has risen four feet two inches. Nearly 4.000 dead rats were coliected this month. The plague is decreasing in the Canton district. Latest news from Canton is to the effect that although the plague was claiming leas victims in that city than for weeks past, yet it is causing sad havoc in towns and villages to the northward and westward. In Hong Kong from May 3lst to June 7th, 577 deathe are reported, 239 cases being under treat- ment. The total number from the out- break to that date is abont 12,000. On June 9th the official Gazctte an- nounced that a telegram had been received by the Foreign Department from the Nagasaki prefect to the effect that the cap- tain of the Pacific Mail steamer Pern, which arrived at Nagaeaki on the 7th inst., from Hong Kong, via Amoy, re ported to the sanitary officials at Nagasa-~ ki that one of the Chinese stokers of his ship was affected with the plague on the 4th inst., and died during the same night, his remains being at once buried at sea.
