'Ibis is the first time the castle has been let. It is a princely property; and around it for miles are shootings and moors. Sir Thomas Lipton will entertain _there this summer after Cowes in splendid style. Among the guests who will visit him are Mr. and Mrs. C. Oliver Iselin and possib-5, ly the Prince of Wales. Beairsto and a lady friend were driving in from North River, by way of Douglas Street, their horse fell into a manhole between five and six feet deep on the latter street that had been left unlighted and without any covering except a piece of board aboutldve inches wide. The lady was thrown from the carriage into the manhole with the horse, and was rendered insensible. Mr. Albert Hale who, with some lady friends, was also coming in from North River, reached the scene shortly after the acci- dent, and rendered all the assistance in his power. Several other men also gave assistance. The horse was removed from the manhole and led out through the sewer trench that was being dug. The. lady was removed to a house near by and soon as possible afterwards was taken to her home. Dr. S. R. Barracks last night. wi s enjoyed by a large number of visitors and the corps assembled for training. The program was impromptu and was taken part in by several members in uniform. The Band of the 82nd Regt. played several fine selections which were interspersed by solos, recitations and readings. The reading of Rev. Leo. Williams was very appropriate and was well. received. Major Crockett’s recitation, “The Union Jack”-" received the prolonged applause of the. audience. Mr. Lamont presided at the organ as accompanist. Regrets were ex- pressed on all sides that the program was not longer. The ofiicers and men atCamp Brighton appreciate the interest taken by citizens generally in millitary affairs, and look forward next year to many pleasant hours spent in like manner. To-day. the inspection by the D. 0. C. will take place commencing at 8 0’clock a. in. Company inspection of arms, acooutremeiits and muster parade. At 2.30 p. m. Battalion inspection will begin when the regiment wlll perform various evolutions practiced during Camp. The 82nd Regt. were never ir as good shape as at present, consider- i ig the large _ percentage of recruits that marched into camp ten days ago. Great credit is due to theStafl` Instructors, Sgts. Bayers, Little and Terrence for their in- defatigable efforts and attention given the training and instruction since they arrived In camp. They have been painstaking and persistent in their endeavor to bring the men up to their present standard. The Camp -will break up on Saturday when the different companies will return to their _respective Company headquarters. No. 5 C0., 4th Regt., C. A.-This company, this year consisted in a large part of recruits, but they have the vim and the enthusiasm that makes soldiers. Captain Johnston is the idol of his men, while the Co. in common with the other Artillery Co’s were especially favored in having such an ideal instructor as Segt. _ Instructor Sutherland has proved himself to be. The instructor while strict in all matters per taining to drill has made himself a favor- ite with the membersof this Company and in wnversation with the boys the word all round, was “he’s the right stuff” or “he’s a good fellow.” This Co. was yester- day paradad for inspection in infantry movements and after the Capt. had put the men through the usual formations the D. 0. C.expr~essed himself as being highly pleased with the showing the Co. had made. N o. 5, said Lieut.-Col. Moore is now one of the leading Co’s of the 4th Reg. C. A. _whichgfhas always taken iii-st 'place the Artillery Co’s of they-Dominion. The inspection in gunnery, drill took place at the drill shed. 'There were four detoclrments, two forty pounders and two 6460. To the onlooker everything seemed to pass off without a hitch which view was sustained by the remarks of the D. 0. C. The gun drill he said was especi- ally soldierlike and rapid. There is fast growing* up a military spirit in this Com- piuy and nearly all of the boys express themselves as ready to be back next year. NOTES. Sergt.
