R. Smailwood in an Interview With The Guardian. gm.. Mr. C. R. Smallwood, who returned fiom the Maritime Winter Fair, Amhersr, was interviewed by a. GUARDIAN repre- sentative on Saturday. In referring tc the show he said : “The Maritime Winter Fair held at Am- herst on the 17th, 18th and 19th insl. was a complete success. “The management had hired the New Roller Rink for the place to hold it think- ing at the time it would be plenty large for the purpose. Vt hen the entries began coming in they were compelled to build an annex about 50 feet long in which to find- accommodation for the exhibits. This fair was conducted very much on the same lines as the one held annually at Guelph. n “The prize animals aretakeninto a ring and the Judges who judged them show to the spectmors the reason for their judgment. This is very instructive es- pecially with regard to fat cattle. Before thejudging had begun, amateurs had made their choice of the fat cattle but when the decision was given in almost every instance they were wrong. As re- gards this elsss of animals the general im- pgassion has always been that fat was what was required but such oelief got a. great set back at this show. It ls the animal that has the best solid meat on its bones put there gradually and not the fat one, lacking the other qualities, which takes theprise. “It is to be re8l‘°_tted that ‘no more than two Islandllsland exhibitors were there with stock. There seems to have been a wrong impression _ abroad among our _Island men, vix-_ _that all animals eahibited . would have tobe slaughtered. This is not so. Lo exhibitor can enter in the live stock uimal classes. And also in the block test if he chooses, or he may enter in elf»h6l‘.1\ _ _ ‘ Mr. J. W. Oallbeck’s exhibit of pigswsa very much admired sud he carried _away nearly all the prizes. Mr. ._I_,__ (Q. Irvici’ exhibited in sheep and did very well. “Each evening during the exhibition a public meeting was held in the Opera House and prominent men such, as Dr. Mills, Pres. of the Guelph Agricultural Gillege, F.
